Think u get private assessment for ST and OT first so can start on the therapy. As for assessment to confirm if your boy is ASD, maybe wait till you meet the doc at KKH first and listen to what he/she has to say.

Does that mean $1k for that assessment for ST and OT? I started mine at rehab without these. Just went thru polyclinic referral to the PD at kkh( I went thru the asthma/ allergies route). Then when I was getting the allergy test, I asked for referral for therapies. It bypassed CDC and went to rehab therapies.

No no no, assessment by ST or OT will not cost u $1k, about $120 to $150 depending on the centre.

Whether home based or centre based, the quality really depends on the therapist conducting the session. It’s true that there is some trial and error involved in getting a therapist that can relate to the child and get the child to improve. I have also come across therapists who started off with quantum leaps with mt child and then reach plateau after a period. So it has been a moving target for us and we adapt according to the changing needs of my daughter.

As for assessment, there may not be a need to go for both private and kkh clinical assessment. Besides the money issue, it may also create confusion if the two psychologists tell you different things. This is possible as the assessment tool can be subjective to a certain extent, and the child is still young. Whatever the diagnosis, the obvious fact is that if the child needs help, we need to support.

For us, as we were only able to get an appointment with the psychologist some time away, we went ahead to see the ST and OT to address the gaps while we waited to see psychologist.

This is what I’m planning to do, hope it may help you a bit.

Clinical assessment: I’m going with NUh for a good reason- cheaper. I’ll take the report and run to private centers.

Therapy: I’m going ahead with private because it’s shorter wait time and more regular.

I think you first need to select a center of your choice. Book an appointment with the therapist at the center. The therapist will tell you what therapy he needs. When you say assessment with The therapists, it is not to get the diagnosis- don’t be confused. Therapist won’t and can’t give you the diagnosis. But they can tell you what therapy to start. That said, you can go to these centers to get clinical assessments or diagnosis but you have to book to see a their private psychologists which can cost up to $2k. That’s why, for clinical assessment or to get the diagnosis, I’m sticking to NUH.

clinical assessment = diagnosis in my post. as they require psychologist.
for therapy assessment, requirement is not so high, just ST or OT therapist, hence i know the fee is cheaper, around 200 + -.

confusion arises from the reply from different centres, all recommends me to go for clinical assessment except dynamics.

after all the doubts clear thanks to you, i am down to selecting home based or centre based…

Hi Blokus,
We are trying out wee care 'cos this is the centre which our psychologist recommend n we dun wan to waste time n money checking out other centres unless wee care cannot help. My boy is already 5.5. We have only 1.5 yrs to prep him as much as possible on his social skills n correct some of his other quirkiness for mainstream sch.

Hi,
Yes, Dr Ong Yean Sze, she is really gifted when comes to handling her young patients; thou my child is not autistic, but I have seen her soothing many young ones when we were at the waiting area. My child actually \"enjoys\" his dental checkup with Dr Ong.
It's quite difficult to book a slot with her, you may have to call for appointment as early as 2 months in advance.

My son went at 3 and he refused to open mouth and cried buckets. So I'm not in a hurry. He finally went again at 5yrs old. Now he wanna be a dentist. coz he says dentists take away the pain. He now has no fear of the dentists even after root canal and pulling out teeth.

Regarding taking $1 rides, why so hard on him? I refused to let my kids try the rides. Hahah. Coz to me, it becomes a bad habit and every time u come across one, they wanna ride on it. My hb let him try once and he freaked out when it moved. We wasted the money seeing the ride move without him inside! So we asked another kid nearby to take the ride instead.


Now he’s ok with it. All kids have some fears in them. Don’t be so harsh on him and expect this 3 yr old to be so brave. He is still a small kid.

Mashy, omg , so young root canal.. he so brave!!! i wish my son will be like yours one day... 3yo is old lioa.. clock is ticking i very scare. how i wish i can stop the clock


ok understand now, i will not force him on anyting tat he doesnt like unless is a needs to.

actually most of ASD doesnt like swing, do u know.. i oso duno why..

whenever go rides all passerby will look and laugh away cuz of my son reaaction like very fearful to sit on it, but he did not cause a din la.. jus refuse to sit inside & resistant.. very funny moment.. jus duno why, younger time he use to take w/o fear, maybe now more awareness he got frighten...
