Why screen kids in P1?
-
Is the test administered randomly in selected schools or across the board? :?
-
I just asked my DS3 who is in P1 and showed him a sample of the Raven’s test and he confirmed that he did this test in school not too long ago. Yikes! The teacher didn’t tell us at all!!
I’ll ask the DS’s FT and update here if I have any news. -
If the MOE were to let parents know or if such tests are made known, it will be another GEP training situation. Parents will start to send the children for IQ test training before P1. Tuition centres will try to take the opportunity to conduct P1 IQ test prep class. There will be "tuition teacher" who may also start to provide such "tuition". <sigh>

Maybe that's one of the topics to raise during the National Conversation, full disclosure, on matters relating to our kids' education.

The market is there for parents who wish to start early. Brain training classes for 6 months old bb onwards. One has pre-natal training, brain training while bb is still in the womb. The IQ class, I think one is already starting at K2 or K1?
There are new ones coming up too.
As a parent I want to know what is carried out while my kid is in school.
For me it cannot be a case of parents cannot handle the truth or we want to protect the kids' childhood and makes it ok for infor to be withheld intentionally or not.
BTW, I'm not prepping my kids for GEP

Chenonceau:
Why would you assume there is intervention for discussion's sake? Didn't MOE already say it will intervene? Do you suspect MOE is lying then?
Assuming it is intervention for discussion sake. So aren't intervention supposed to be confidential? Why is there a need to share with parents who do not matter assuming my child has nothing to do with this? :? not that I am not concerned... I am more concerned about other stuff in our environment.ksi:
[quote=\"Chenonceau\"]Ummm... yes I do. If they take my son's IQ, I not only expect them to ask my permission first... I expect them to give me the results of the IQ test. Again, this is stipulated in research ethics legislation in many countries. In UNSW tests, we get results back. In school tests, we get results back. In PE tests, we get results back. PSLE gives us results back. Why not this?
But whether I expect or not doesn't matter. The fact is this... MOE said that it intended to intervene. So in some cases, it would intervene (unless it is lying which I think not). Even if in YOUR case, there is no intervention.
I think we misunderstand each other. You reason that since the MOE said it would intervene then I expect them to contact YOU. Not at all. I quite understand YOUR child may not need intervention. I am saying that even if YOUR child requires no intervention, other children will. My questions are...
- What is the data used for?
- What are the interventions, if any are required?
To me the most worrying signs in our education today is behaviour. I am still quite appalled though no longer surprised that people can mistaken \"L\" for losers class.... Food for thought.
The statement was made with reference to your 2 statements in red above to continue the discussion. I never suspect anything leh but you are suspecting me for suspecting MOE hor....
I never said that MOE should share other people's interventions with parents just to satisfy some nosey parkers... BUT if they took data from my kid, they need to tell me what potential intervention my kid COULD be subjected to... and seek my agreement before taking that data.
AFTER taking the data, they need to follow up by telling my me MY kid's results. Of course it is confidential... but my kid and I should know results pertinent to ourselves.
This is the difference in our views. If I give my charge to MOE, I give them some empowerment over my child's education journey. To me, the test was not intrusive and I see no bad consequence in them trying to understand the children better. Better still, I am not even sure how accurate since my child went to poo in between the tests and not sure if she completed them.
Also I am not a sophisticated parent who can possibly understand everything that MOE is trying to explain to me...it might be info overload for me if it does not concern my child specifically. So this is just differences in views.
If ADULTS respected the privacy and confidentiality of our children to keep their hands off our children's IQ data... AND refrain from putting them into high ability and low ability classes in P1, the Losers issue wouldn't surface at all.
I think we cannot mix the two things here. Are we saying the losers issue would not surface without this testing? They stream in P2 or P3 depending on schools and there will still be weak classes identified later. The so-called \"losers\" issue only surfaces later because the intrinsic behaviour or value system is already a problem and only needs a trigger.
The adults at MOE don't behave... we expect the children to?
My short answer is Yes, I still expect my child to behave. I do not tie my child's behaviour to how MOE behaves.
I better stop this now. I am starting to repeat myself. Apologies if I have offended. Your goodwill is important to me.
It is good we present views of at least 2 types of parents. I, the not sophisticated parent, have no issue of the test conducted without loading me with unnecessary info and trust the info is not misused. You, the more sophisticated parent, would like to know details of the test. Oh...just one thing...don't suspect me of anything I don't suspect.

I am also "the unsophisticated parent". Strangely As I read thru the postings, I am reminded of the $60 hair cut case. It is like " you want to cut my son’s hair, you must seek my permission first. If not, no matter what your intention, is, you are wrong."

There are many sophisticated parents. me too the unsophisticated one - but i will make sure that my DC's hair is cut before it even gets to the DM in school.
:scared: -
I do not expect to be informed beforehand of such tests, I see no such need. But I would appreciate being informed after what tests have been done and the results shared with the parents.

The hair cut thing is school rule. The school rules are published and clearly stated. I cooperate with the school.
GEP testing, parents’ consent are sought, so I’m curious why this particular test was not made known to the parents. My dd1 told me about it.
I’m a middle-path parent, neither sophisticated or unsophisticated. I like to know what’s going on.
I may not understand or agree completely but I like to be in the loop.
Hmm, maybe do it this way, full disclosure can be given to parents who wish to know and parents who do not need to know, MOE can also respect their wishes and nothing need to be disclosed to them unless there’s a need to. In this case, at least, all parties’ wishes will be respected.
