All About Autism

My 3 years 4 mths kid has speech delay as he is unable to converse in sentence and few words, mostly unintelligent speech or saying a few words repetitively to cover up for the missing words. During his 1st 2 years of language milestone, it seem normal, but since after 2 years old, there is not much of a language progression. During his 2nd year, our pediatrician let us wait till he turn 3. And we are worried now as there is no improvements on him while most kids should have a big leap during this period. Due to his condition, we have not yet send him to any preschool or childcare. I observed that he do not seem to mix well with kids his age. Most of the time, he stands at a corner observing kids at the playground. And when he feel more comfortable or depending on his mood, he do play with them. Sometimes he seem very sociable with strangers and with kids his age. He do have some similar signs persistent with autism such as in the past, align objects in very straight line which he seldom do nowsdays. Repeating words he knows. Depending on his mood, he can clearly copycat what u speak and he is quite good in remembering songs he like and sing as well. He has good skills in operating equipments, n although he has speech delay, he however follows simple instructions which i asked him to do, such as close the door, switch on/off lights…etc…I tried to teach him new words and read books to him, but most of the time, he rejected. Lately he had a fever, and i brought him to see a doctor and he scream and run away when he saw the doctor. He also like to take lifts, obsessed with it…so much so that we have to avoid any lifts near his sight. It so stressful and I sense he might have autism. Any expert here can guide me?

I agree with u on helplessmum’s case. The teachers just aren’t helpful t all. My boy’s teachers were accomodating even when we didn’t know what’s wrong with him. We didn’t have a diagnosis still end of k2. When my son couldn’t nap, he was just made to lie down and keep to his mat. When he didn’t watch tv and instead hide behind the cuPboards, they also didn’t take issue with it. When they were having lessons and he walked around, they jus kept bringing him
Back and sit next to him to complete his work. His classmates took turns to feed him when he didn’t want to eat.
I seriously think that it’s better to change the sch than to change the child. My boy’s earlier sch couldn’t accommodate to his needs so instead of changing him, I opted to change sch. The sch are just thinking of themselves and not your child. That’s where I draw a line. -

IMO your son could just simply be speech delayed. By being speech delayed, it affected his other skills including social skills. How can u make friends if they don’t understand what u are saying? So in the end, he will become more withdrawn. Once that hurdle is crossed and his confidence level is up, everything will improve.
U can still send him to sch even if he doesn’t talk much. Mine started from 2 yrs old. He couldn’t talk till 2.5. His teachers congratulated me when he started talking. Lol. He also made friends with another kid who also couldn’t talk well. Somehow the two could understand each others’ gibberish. Lol.
Get him to speech therapy. Early help can benefit a lot. U can try kkh rehab or go private. -
Optrex80, I know you are seeking some answers here for your son but truth be told, none of us here can tell you if he's on the spectrum or just delayed. I was searching for answers from all my friends but ended with inconclusive answers. Only now finally I'm getting the diagnosis when my son is 5 years old. I wish I had knocked on the right door earlier. On hindsight, I think the best advice I could have gotten was, go & seek medical opinion. Not your regular PD but the doctors at child development unit at kkh or NUH. Go to polyclinic, get a referral to see these Drs. You will get subsidized rate via this route. And as mashy say, now that you know he's got speech delay then quickly get therapy for him. Again, You can book speech therapy at the 2 hospitals or go private. Hope this helps.

Hey Fizz
Just want to share with you about the wee care social group class at wee care, since you asked earlier. Actually double E shared quite in detailed earlier. Basically, they will have circle time- introducing their own names with the large group, some large group activities- this term is on listening stories, and some Q&A on the story. Thereafter, they will break into smaller groups. During this session, they teach the child how to get the attention of the person they are talking to & make the kids practise. Basically they will teach the kids social know hows and get them to Practise with each other.
Im not sure about the other two centers though, I didn’t do much research honestly. But got to caution you, wee care don’t encourage kids to go for social class before going through their therapy, it seems. -
Hi people, do i need to bring my kid with me to polyclinic for a referral letter to Child Development Unit in KKH? Does the doctor at polyclinic need to physically see my child and inspect his condition? Because he really have phobia with seeing doctors, always running away and screaming… and that affect his mood. Recently he just visited a pediatrician for his fever and causing him some trauma… Is the in-between appointments or sessions at KKH very limited? I was thinking of hiring a private home speech therapist for him…

Yes of course. U need to bring him for the polyclinic appt. If not, u can call cdu direct as a private patient. No matter what he will be seeing someone whether dr or therapist in future. It's better if u teach him that there's nothing to fear thru story books or cartoons. Elmo has a DVD on Elmo goes to the dr. Maybe u can search for it on YouTube.
IMHO, doing it at home is just escaping the problem. Maybe it's becoz he is already kept at home and there's little socialization opportunities. Bring him to playdates first then expand his social circle wider. It will be hard initially but he needs to know that meeting others is the normal thing to do. -

Thanks for info on fish oil. Fizz I dare not give my son vat C , worried he too awake n energetic til dun nap.. My son only just started w lactoGG recommended by GP. But still not much of help . I will combine it w fish oil then.
My son school will ask the kids of all classes to sit together to watch tv before 930am n after 530Pm when no programme ... N wait for going home ..
Stage performance worried my son will cause danger to other kids if he accidentally knock n fall from stage or himself fall down from stage..at least yr kids just sit down or just shy away.. For him he might carry away or overly excited ..
Mashy,
I feel my son interested to dance because whenever I on the music he will try to dance when at home ...but duno how to stay put at one location ..
Should I withdraw him from taking part ? He might feel hurt if he sees all his fren at stage n he is not. And also practise time in school he is not allow to move just sit n watch... This I feel hurt ....
Gifts.
Whenever my son fall sick or taking antibiotic his rashes will get real bad n scratch until bleeding..
My son can't go around during dance he will disturb others so don't hav such role for him.
IMO, the filling time before lessons start and home time is the BEST time for kids, especially our ASDs, to learn to socialise. Sitting in front of the TV for 2hrs dulls the mind. In my boy's cc, during these periods, they get to do crafts, draw, read or even play Mr Wolf, what's the time, with the teachers. Even playing alone with figurines is ok.
If the teachers really cannot handle your son but are willing to try, get the teachers to work with the therapists. There was a moderate ASD kid in his cc last year. He would run and run and scream if he were held. The P admitted that they could not handle him but worked with the therapists ways to handle him. Of course, this involved school visits by the therapists. The question is, how willing. My boy would walked from his N1 group to the K2 group when he first joined. They allow him to walk around and even join the older classes to satisfy his curiosity first and slowly led him back to his group more frequently till he's comfy to engage himself in his own class.
The ball is in your hands to choose the right teachers and culture to work with your child. There are schools out there which are willing. But give the current teachers a chance first by working and communicating closely with them. -

You know, the more I hear about your son's cc, the more I think the staff there are just not very good for ASD kids. They obviously don't know how to manage, or are not willing to adapt to your child's needs. I know it's tough to find one where the staff are accommodating, but you really can't change your son enough to behave totally like an NT kid, especially not at this age. It's the teachers who need to adapt.helplessmum3:

Maybe you can suggest that when he is disruptive during the TV watching, they allow him to do something that will engross him while waiting. Why must he do the same thing as everyone else, especially when this is obviously a time-filler and not part of the curriculum?
As for the concert, it should not be beyond them to create a little part for him, even if it's just jumping around in a part of the stage. I'm sure if they designate a reasonable space for him, he can be taught to stay in there, as least for a few minutes. Or they can give him a 'role' somewhere near a teacher who can keep and eye on him. During practices, they can also give him something to do, even if it's not the same as everyone else. They can tell him he's got a special role, not that he needs to be quiet and not be a nuisance.
I feel the teachers are being too demanding given that your child is an ASD child. They cannot expect that he can be like an NT child at 3yo, given that he is still early in the learning phase. Have you given them info about ASD to help educate them? They will claim to have learned it during their training, but most don't understand or remember what they have learned. But when faced with such a child, they may be more willing to think about it again.
slmkhoo.
i even engage private therapist to go down to school few times to guide the teachers.... so after that in school whether they do or not, we do not know...
Also meet up with the school special needs department to work all together...
Still, this the outcome i get.... if they tell me they try all methods , i still don't know if its true a not..
now whenever i play the concert song, my son is very upset unlike previously he will try to dance.. :-(. something must have happen again...
The teachers are awared of my son ASD.
hiaz. its such being poor and having an ASD kid. this the cheapest school i can find at my home..
does really NT kids will dance at 3yo and watch TV obediently when need to watch?
i not sure, cuz my ASD son is my only child.. -
