C cannot be opaque, if opaque, the other shapes will not show, so option 1 and 3 already wrong. left 2 and 4.
since the smallest shadow is the rectangle inside, E must be opaque, so between 2 and 4, option 2 aluminium is opaque. and D must also be opaque to cast the round ring around E. so ans is 2. -

Why can’t C be in the shape of a ring, middle portion cut out?
Size of D is smaller than the shadow of the ring formed. -

The part where you mentioned that magnet interrupts the machine,that is where you did not explain in science terms.
Here is a alternate answer:
The card will not be scanned as the magnet would affect the information stored in the ez-link card.Thus,the machine would not be able to scan the card since the information in the card is lost.
