MP echoes calls for PSLE to be scrapped

An education route with many such U-turns for students who failed to excel in their early years, will benefit late bloomers and bring less stress to the students during their early school years (read: Primary school).

The \"late bloomer\" is not a myth. I know of someone close who was consistently amongst the last 10 in his class in primary school, got an overall 'O' level score of 12 (or was it 13?), and eventually ended up with 1st class honours from NUS, and that was back in the days when a 1st class from NUS was a rarity.

The thing about late bloomers is they HATE to mug/cram. That is why they don't do so well in the early years when rote learning gives an advantage. At the higher levels where one has to do more than rote learn in order to do well, they just blow past the competition who got there through cramming.

The problem with streaming at an early age is there is a good chance we may be streaming the wrong people out.

Me? I remember getting a few duck eggs in my primary school days. And those were sympathy scores. Technically, I got less than zero. :rotflmao: Come to think of it, I was crappiest around Pri 3. :yikes:

This is where we can give credit to the Singapore system. For late bloomers, all is not doomed. I know the some JC classmates I had were late bloomers but they managed to get back on track. Streaming out does not mean cannot get stream back in . Streaming in does not mean cannot be streamed out. Life is fair in that sense, nothing is static.

The system continuously allows normal stream to get back into express and IP to go express and express to go IP. And I really like the fact that it caters for people's different rate of development and have the options to move to which category suits their stage of development. The system does provide flexibility, it is our minds that is not versatile. We pronounced \"death sentence\" to children stream to normal or ITE in our minds and yet we feel the education system penalises them. I know late bloomers can move from normal back to express or ITE back to express as well. In fact the options offered in our system is pretty impressive. During my time, the options were not so many though they existed. But I was also dumb, I thought there was only one track cos no one advised me that there were multiple tracks to get to Rome. So alternatively instead of letting your children know about so many options, make them dumb like me.

All of the generations of children so far have gone through the PSLE without any problems. Why suddenly they need to scrap it?

I feel its very unfair for all generations that have taken the PSLE.

I feel its very unfair for all generations that have taken the PSLE.

I support to scrape PSLE. It is still too early to segregate students according to their scores at age of 12:- Many who finally find their grove into studies will blossom later, vice verse. Needless to say, streaming at earlier stage is even pointless.

Don't think if they were to implement it will be that fast. As for Ichigokun's concern, I also took PSLE, and it doesn't make any difference to me now, or even when I went for interviews. What's more, the scores are by cohorts and not your exact points, hence one cannot compare PSLE results across the board.

Like my time and my elder siblings time - best. Have PSLE, but no grades/scores. Nobody bothered as long as passed, except those who were from primary schools with no affiliated sec schools.
