MP echoes calls for PSLE to be scrapped

All of the generations of children so far have gone through the PSLE without any problems. Why suddenly they need to scrap it?

I feel its very unfair for all generations that have taken the PSLE.

MOE can tweak PSLE but shouldnt scrap. So many generations have gone thru it, why are MPs asking to scrap this? Even though my son is taking it this year and under lots of pressure, I am still for it.

My understanding is that PSLE is a secondary school placement exam but why go through an especially difficult process in order to place students into schools? Ok so there are people who want to go into Top 10 schools. So we ask ourselves how to place students into the Top schoools like Nanyang, RI, etc, etc? There’s the argument that too much resources will be wasted if these schools have their own placement exams if there is no PSLE. So you mean the millions of dollars spent on tuition in order to get through the PSLE exam is not money/resources/time wasted?


Is there really a need to have cut-off points for every single school? Must we place every single child by using a score? Must every child be lined up in a line from highest score to the lowest score? Really? Must we do this?

I’ve no issues with an exam evaluating what my child has learnt, assessing what he is good at and what he needs more work. There’s a place for assessment of learning. What I can’t grab my head around is having an exam in order to place a child in a school.

So what I would ask is for MOE to review what’s really the purpose of PSLE? Is it healthy to have the best of the best students for the Top 10 schools to be bundled up together? Is it not elitist to have schools where there are no "slower" students? Why? Why must top students only be among themselves? How do we teach these students to have compassion for "slower" people? How else do they learn to be more understanding of people who are less academic than they are, who have different abilities & intelligences? Must we already have such segregation at Secondary level? That’s what the PSLE is supporting. That’s what I have issues with.

Don't think if they were to implement it will be that fast. As for Ichigokun's concern, I also took PSLE, and it doesn't make any difference to me now, or even when I went for interviews. What's more, the scores are by cohorts and not your exact points, hence one cannot compare PSLE results across the board.

This is new to me man! During my time, PSLE was already a big event and that was in the 70s. We were all looking forward(though anxiously) to results announcement day.

This is new to me man! During my time, PSLE was already a big event and that was in the 70s. We were all looking forward(though anxiously) to results announcement day.

Yah, mine in the 70s. No grades/scores on my cert. But 1980 started having scores.

As long as passed, can just continue to the affiliated sec school. Contented liao.

Have - I have my PSLE cert! But only shows name, shows \"passed\" (obviously - or else how to have cert!), school's name not on, only as a school embossed seal. No Birth Cert/NRIC number - how to certify it's ours, har? haha. But got full NRIC name lah.

Before T-score days, there were grades given. Perhaps you were in affiliated secondary school you did not notice. For non affiliation ones, using the grades estimation to put in 4-6 choices of schools.

PSLE cert is given before T-score days as it is a leaving certificate.

Wasn't that the practice in the 1990s? In the 1980s, my friends were still just sharing yesterday that they put in their secondary school selections only AFTER the results out.

I know definitely in the mid 2000s, they'd changed back to this similar system (after psle results).
