My nephew had this same problem when he was that age. Someone taught my sil to let my nephew wear diapers but sit on the toilet bowl to poo. By and by try to get him to do his business without the diaper.... viola! It worked for her! πŸ˜‰

let nature take it course. Some will be faster, some will be slower.

My boy 7 year old still can wet the bed… but my girl 4 year old know how to wake at midnite to release herself.

          i am having a β€˜problem’.

my ds2 needs to sit down to pee. attempts to teach him to stand usually ends up wetting his pants/legs. he prefers to climb onto the seat and sit. to do that, he needs to takes off his shorts. i had not let him go diaper-free in school cos i am worried that the toilet seats are dirty and he may dirty his shorts if the toilet floor is wet (and also cos at times if there is no reminder, he will wait until last min before requesting to go toilet and then will not be in time).

Mmmm... I think if my memory does not fail me ( it was some 16 and 19 years ago), our two girls were fully toilet-trained by the time they were 18 months old. Not that I want to 'howlian' but it was out of necessity. We were rather poor then and so could not afford to spend too much money on disposal diapers. Our girls wore cloth diapers when at home and of course disposal diapers when going out. My wife was a SAHM then so she was able to change their cloth diapers when they were wet or soiled. Even then washing numerous cloth diapers every day was a no joke affair and so we were very eager to wane them off wearing diapers as soon as possible.

We kept on reminding them that when they felt the urgency, they must give us the signal by their expression of their face or verbally ( when a liitle older) and we would quickly rush the toilet bowl(potty) to them in time for them to do their things. Of course initially there were times when we were a little too late. But as times passed by, as this habit was being cultivated they were able to give us the signal a little earlier and eventually, they were able to go to the toilet bowl by themselves.
Though they were totally waned off from diapers, even during their night sleep, there were a few times when they still wet their bed. But it was ok because we always laid a rubber mat under the mattress cover to prevent the mattress from getting wet.
I guess times are different now. Then we were forced by circumstances to be more frugal. πŸ˜„

              Hi jedamum,

              I have a 28 mth old son.

I started toilet training him at the age of 1, naturally he resisted. But by 18 mths he was able to verbalize but refused to go to the loo or take out diapers.

I left it alone for a while and just b4 turning two, started wearing him undies, so he was forced to verbalize and when he didn't, he would touch his undie, that is when we will bring him to the bathroom. Few accidents here and there, but funnily, he has a sense of shame so he will run to the bathroom to pee. Only in the last 3 weeks or so, began to poo in the bathroom too.

But currently, DS will only pee and poo at the shower area. Initially for peeing, he will squat, only recently started standing with his legs wide apart, but sometimes still wet his legs. I tried to make him sit in the 'big bowl' to pee once, but subsequently decided against it cuz boys don't usu pee that way rite???

I think my DS seems to be working in stages for toilet training ie verbalize when in diapers, then in undies, pee and poo first in shower area, then progress to the 'big bowl' later.

I was advised by a frd to get DH's help ie bring him to the loo to encourage him the right way to pee and even show via 'modelling'. I am trying to do that but DH is a bit old fashioned in the sense like, \"my dad didn't teach me ...\" Anyway, he only recently relented and promised to start this weekend. πŸ˜„

Currently, I wear him diapers when we go out. Anyway, I too wonder how is he going to manage once he starts preschool ie dirty toilets and so on .. cuz I am thinking of sending him to a kindy mid next yr or in 2011. :?

                too late for me.... 😐
he likes to sit facing in so every time need to take his shorts off....and cos he is afraid of the dark, he'll sit on the bowl and shouts 'it's dark in here' everytime he goes to the toilet'

                  Hi all,

This may be a little offtrack...but does anyone have any idea how to \"potty train\" the child to be dry in the night? My 5 year old is still on pull-ups in the night!

                    Hi Andaiz,

I was in the same situation a few months ago. My DD2 at 3 was already off diapers at night while DD1 at 5 still needed diapers. 😐 For DD2, it just happened naturally without any training 😎

A friend shared that her son only managed to be off diapers completely by 6. She bought an inflatable bed and let him sleep on it during \"training\". If he happens to wet his bed, he will just hv to wake up himself, clean the bed ( quite easy cos inflatable is made of rubber/ plastic), put on a new sheet before he could sleep again. 😒 In less than 2 weeks, he was able to wake up to pee by himself. Guess he realise the hassle of the cleaning.. waking up to pee was an easier option πŸ˜„

For my case, i used the reward chart. Told her if her pants are dry in the morning, she gets a sticker. Every 10 stickers, she gets a reward. Put up a similar chart for DD2 as well. Initially, only DD2 gets the sticker since she was already ok in the 1st place. DD1 was upset as she had less stickers than mei mei, so no reward 😒

She sort of buck up and she woke up dry on more mornings. Then we stop using pull ups for her gradually. Within a month or so, she is completely off diapers and she wakes up by herself to go wee wee if she needs to.

Of cos, there are times when she is too tired and oversleeps... 😞 But i guess this is part of the process... As of now, the frequency of such bed wetting has dropped tremendously πŸ˜‰

Every child is different.. so you may like to try out these 2 methods to see if it suits yours. :celebrate:

                      Hi jedamum,

Just curious ... have you tried re-educating him??

I know there will be resistence, but thru persistence and consistency .... and some creative strategy, wouldn't he come ard.

I make a big thing when he does his p and p in the bathroom ... I clap and cheer and wolf whistle cuz he likes the attention... that kind of encourages him. The sticker/reward method didn't work (maybe too young). πŸ˜„

                        Hi Poohbear,

Oh the method above sounds good. Will keep that in mind for the future.

And yes, I do agree that evry child is different.... when it comes to toilet training.
