MP echoes calls for PSLE to be scrapped
-
verykiasumummy:
but it seems nobody here agrees to scrap psle.. its not a phenomenon like everyone wants to scrap erp lei...concern2:
so if so many KSP say there is no such need to scrap psle... why the mp go propose in the first place?? is he representing only himself??
Because KSP cannot represent everyone mah.., only the kiasu ones, wu su, jia wu yia mah, and kiasu, must bia, and ai bia, jia e yia mah
dunno what the mp thinking..
verykiasumummy, you n'r read my post har?! I represent the minority in here. And I am glad that MPs are speaking up for the minorities
Remember, they don't do populist policies?

Ah, tanks verykiasumummy tanks....you make me go and read the article in detail again....
Actually they are still in a discussion mode only... think the important statement from the chairman of that group has been missed:
Mountbatten MP Lim Biow Chuan, who chairs the GPC for Education, reiterated the PSLE's purpose as a placement exam. \"No matter how you see it, you cannot run away from the fact that students have differing abilities,\" said Mr Lim.
The above will likely continue to apply to the free/subsidised education category of kids, the majority.
There are 2 important messages in that article to cater for the minority:
1. MOE to loosen the control on education and provide some parents(who want) with more alternatives and that is, let parents control the education process on their own for their kids. This is to address basically the vocal and sophisticated group who can chart out their own education journey for their kids and perhaps due to the growing homeschool group. I don't belong to this group cos I am only vocal but not sophisticated parent.
2. Idea of private schools is now being tossed. So the government is saying, you can now pay as much as you want for private education, no need to enjoy the free one anymore... Go private one then perhaps PSLE is not compulsory and in secondary school...due to private primary...will naturally flow to private secondary aka international schools perhaps or new private schools setup. In other words, the government wants to empower the sophisticated and able parents to be your own MOE. Good right? I kee qiu!!

but then again… with parents setting their own standards and this and that… the pressure will still be increased, cos only the very ks ones will join and being very ks, they will strive to be even better than the current model and dead, there goes to mainstream…

concern2:
This I agree. Even if PSLE is really scrapped, the popular schools will remain popular, I am sure. The history, the alumnus, the track records. And birds of the same feathers will tend to flock togetherksi:
The core problem is in the mindset here....it sounds like unless we reach communism, we will never end this perceived inequality talk of schools.
And I don't think that MOE is trying to fool people with slogans, it is however trying to educate that they can only do things within their control, i.e. STOP the schools from competing with one another. I seriously think MOE has done the best thing ever as a first step to show that they are seriously trying to alleviate the pressure that children are facing as they are the ones getting majorly hit, not so much pandering to the parents whom they have no control and some are still lost. And they will continue to pressure the kids academically even if the school does not.... The Paper Chase Dream will always be the motivation.
Unless someone can come up with a feasible way for secondary school placement, PSLE will still remain.
Without it, will the parents send them to any school? I suppose most will still flock to the same top few schools..we won't see any equal distribution kids in the sec schools during our times.. generations after perhaps. -

But that proves one point right? With or without MOE, the mainstream will still \"die\" if there are such parents right?
When you say better than current model, are you referring to less pressure or better results?
1. The pre-requisite to such an alternative would mean a lot more money for education.
2. The pressure may not decrease but increase if parents' expectations are high
3. The result is also not guaranteed for the new path but MOE model has proven to at least produce very exam-smart kids. -

Oh I agree .. other countries like Australia .. Good schools are private schools and their fees are high too if I am not wrong ... I definitely don't agree following their footstep else all good schools eventually will be private school and gov schools are the lousy one .... Object !!!!! -

Only primary has no option so now I am beginning to understand that the govt might be considering to allow able and sophisticated parents to send their kids to private schools from primary level. -

Really? How ,when? You mean all the changes are in the guise of wanting to let parents have the option of international schools in pri level?
