I like this. This creates real competition for MOE. The numbers that opt out of MOE is an indication of the extent to which MOE falls short. Do this and the numbers will be more accurate. Already, Singaporeans cross over the causeway to attend international schools there because the kids just CANNOT cope in our system that requires so much parent input. Others opt for homeschool because the level of parent support required is so high for mainstream kids that it is almost homeschool anyway.

The amount some spend at TLL… and other tuition… can pay private school fees already. It’s already there… just acknowledge it… When teaching quality in mainstream improves, more parents will choose it.

I used to go to private clinics till I realised that under Khaw Boon Wan… public healthcare was really good… and now, I go polyclinic.

1) crossover to causeway to attend international sch
2) amt spend at TLL and other tutitions

Most likely these ppl are the above avg or rich parents.

We could choose from private clinics to polyclinic but the poor do not have the choice. Even if the polyclinic has to wait a long time, they have no choice.

What shd moe set up a private primary sch that benefit only the rich.

Interesting.

B4 this, we see lotsa complains about the cons of having PSLE, people wishing there's no PSLE.
Now we seem to see more on the the cons without PSLE.
😉
Bingo, girl! You've spoken my sentiments! That's why I said Kiasuparents like stress. Without competition, how to be kiasu? No win-lose situation, parents are actually at a loss! 😆
but then again... with parents setting their own standards and this and that... the pressure will still be increased, cos only the very ks ones will join and being very ks, they will strive to be even better than the current model and dead, there goes to mainstream..

Oh I agree .. other countries like Australia .. Good schools are private schools and their fees are high too if I am not wrong ... I definitely don't agree following their footstep else all good schools eventually will be private school and gov schools are the lousy one .... Object !!!!!

SECOND!! :hi5:
I also second that private schools are not a good idea. Currently, there are already international schools for parents who can pay, and who do not wish to be in 'the system'. Having private schools will create greater divisiveness in society.

Maybe pte primary schools also good lah. Let those who can afford pay for the education they want. Then resources saved from subsidizing these groups or revenue earned can put back to gvt school to give the rest a leg up. Hey maybe we can finally have smaller classes  This is my dreaming lah, reality of course might not be so.

Hmmmm....this view can start me thinking differently....

Singhealth has improved I'n standards overtime. I use KK and I use polyclinics, and sure, sometimes during change of systems, there are hiccups, but by my next appointment, they would have been rectified and the staff more well trained. I have no complaints. I hope MOE can do the same.

It’s almost impossible for Singaporean child’s to enter our International schools at present. I heard of stories of Singaporean parents having to jump through hoops put up by MOE just to take their children out of the MOE system.

Rather than divide our society, I would welcome the diversity it offers. After all, we are, by tradition, a country that welcomes people of differnt races, religions, customs, views and encourages all these diverse people to live side, in harmony!
I don’t think MOE should divert resources to setting up private primary schools. Did MOE use tax payers money to set up ACS, SJI, Hua Chong International? Schools that already have a private secondary school can use their current resources and extend it to cover primary education. As to tuition fees, well, let the market decide. It might just be, as Chen suggested, around the same as for local govt school with external tuition thrown in.
Will they become elitist? Maybe, maybe not. In Australia, true, the average private school is better than the average state school. But state schools in certain areas are just as good, and sometimes produce even better academic results than private schools. I was told that these good state schools are in areas where there are a majority of Asian immigrants …
Wouldn’t it be nice to have the choice of, say, Nanyang Primary (International) @ Pungol that leads up to Hua Chong (I)? Or have ACS Pri (International) that offers the IB curriculum for primary schools.

I have neighbours whose kids were in international schools subsequently electing to transfer them into the local schools. My DD used to attend pre-school with an extremely high foreign student ratio and I took her out within a year.

Good post, Laura02.
When the private schools was mentioned by ksi, I believe she meant not from tax-payers and MOE, but private organizations, hence funds being freed up from MOE to improve on govt schools.

As for the international schools, if the govt is sincere in making more options available to parents, all they need to do is to free up the barrier on entrance into international schools, and this will have no effect on majority of the Singaporeans. Yes?

Yes concer2. All MOE really has to do is to allow Singaporeans to put their kids into International schools. But I’ve heard that its getting harder to get a Singaporean child into an International Primary school. Perhaps the FT have been complaining that their kids can’t get places in these International schools.
