My 5 year old has no friends at school. He doesn't initiate play nor respond readily to his friends. So they tend to leave him alone. Very sad. After school all the kids will say 'bye' to each other except to my son. But my son is still blissfully unaware. But he plays with some of my friend's kids though he doesn't talk much just some 'no I don't want!' etc.
Don't worry, it will get better. Mine didn't even recognize his classmate when we met her outside (k2 time). And his class only had 12 kids. Now he can tell me who and who did this and that. Even told me which of his classmates stole from the bookshop and how angry his form teacher was and what she said. Lol.
Mine when his classmates said goodbye or hello, he ignored them! It was only after we rehearsed and role played at home what to do when someone says hello or goodbye to u, then he got better.
Someday your boy will meet a friend who can click with him. Perhaps right now there isn't one yet. -
My boy also I think have selective friends. He doesnt talk to his friends but he is aware of their presence. I think he doesnt know how to express himself yet. But teacher has told me he and his friends are chasing around each other when they are at the playground.
My boy does talk to his little bro, the the little bro, being little, always never reply him
But I am happy to see my boy attempt to talk to his little bro.
Now he also start to be aware of his baby brother (no 3). When he reach home, he will ask what is the baby doing? When I ask him to give baby a hug or kiss, he will do it. Last time he totally refuse to touch his little brother (no 2).
I am also hoping through time as he grows up, he will become better. Actually I realised my boy hold conversation better in mandarin than in english. He never echos when he speaks mandarin.. But he is by right, english speaking and understand english better ... (hope i am making sense here). -
Thanks mashy. I do see some improvements actually. Last time he totally ignores his peers but recently he’s at least responding to them though not always looking at them. I sure hope he’ll find friends like your son. Actually ah, your son sounds very normal leh! Can tell you about the happenings at school!
Nugget: ya lor. My son plays chasing games or ball throwing or anything to do with running around games well with others. But if it involves talking and using speech to have relation with others, no. He is also well aware of the people around him but doesnt try to seek out making a connection with others.Oh the mandarin, I suspect, mandarin is easier to converse than English. Simply because mandarin has no such things as past, present tense, and all the other grammar rules. It’s actually straight forward than English. So maybe that’s why your son expresses better with mandarin? -
My sOn show interest in mandarin , I not sure should I teach him mandarin yet worry he might get confuse ?!

blokus,
my hb also say the same thing. mandarin is much simplier to use compare to english. but still need to talk nonstop to him. -

Haha, he only started to tell us things after he started P1. At first he had his thoughts all jumbled up so after we did the sequencing game, he's better. Think now he is using that to be able to relate incidents better to us. I asked the dr before, she said there's a delay. Like peeing in the restaurant is normal for a 3 yr old toilet training kid but not for a 6 yr old. So similarly, being able to converse and relate things should happen much earlier than now. I'm hopeful that eventually, everything will equalize. He may be delayed in some skills now but later it won't matter anymore. Thanks mashy. I do see some improvements actually.
