The idea behind PSLE is for kids to know where they stand after 6 years of primary school education and secondary school posting.
But it definitely doesn't make sense to push our 11+/12 year olds so hard. There is NO joy in learning at all. They have to learn in order to pass PSLE.
Take synthesis & transformation for eg, a section in English Paper 2. It's not practical but schools give students worksheets to drill them in this area...all for 2 marks per question.
Models in Maths. We were never taught models back then. Yet, kids have to learn that now...my daughter in P2 has been introduced to models in school. Son had to use models to solve his Maths during his P4 SA2 as other methods are frowned upon. But at P5, he is free to use whatever he knows to solve problem sums. This is ridiculous !
PSLE starts 2moro.
My son is so stressed that he was crying in his sleep last night. My hubby and I had to assure him that everything would be fine. Why are our poor kids suffering from this dumb rat race so early in life ? -

I agree with you, Janet.
11/ 12 year kids are pushed so hard that they often just memorise chunks of model answers to regurgitate them in the exams. They often haven’t throughly grasped the concepts behind what they are taught and do not have the time to do so. And that’s why we get kids who struggle through Secondary school and Pre-U.
I also think that much of the synthesis and transformation exercises we get the kids to do now is ridiculous. I have often seen awkward sentence structures given as the correct answer, just to have two simple sentences fit into a given structure. I feel that kids in Primary school should be taught to use simple sentences, mind their tenses and subject verb agreement, build up their vocabulary, and taught to do simple precis (summary of a passage). And encouraged to read - anything, everything, then do a book report or reflection on what they have read. The complex sentences can come later, in Secondary school.
But, I like the model method. I find it much simpler to grasp - its largely pictorial, representational. My dad remembers taught the model method in the 1940s & 1950s, though, then, it went by another name. Having said that, its not for everyone, and I would like to see different methods being taught. I would like to see MOE, and all schools in general, encourage the use of more than one method of solve maths problems. I use to do that - one method to get the answer, then after completing the paper, another method to check the answer. It was fun. Its like looking at the problem from a different way, a different approach … but I was a bit wierd … still am. -
To Chen, verykiasumummy, Janet, and all other parents and kids who are taking their PSLE this year :
Take Care.
And all the best to you.

An article in yesterday’s asia1 mentioned the scrapping of PSLE.
If MOE scraps PSLE, I fear even more what other system it will put in place to stream our young kids. It’s a good idea to insert challenging questions to sieve out the cream of the crop. Not every parent can afford tuition. It’s a scary amount at upper primary.
Firstly, MOE should look at the PSLE exam papers it sets. Can our schools teach students adequately EVERYTHING tested in the exams WITHOUT tutors? Not touch-and-go. Students have to really know how to write an email for example. -
