Exemption from MT does not necessarily equate to giving up learning the language...

I have a friend, whose daughter is exempted, but she didn't tell her daughter about exemption and continued to let her be in MT class. It worked for a while till her daughter found out by the time of exam. Guess what she refused to go to MT class any more.

      Kids are extremely smart.

Unless there is no exam at all, it will be harder for children who dropped MT at primary school stage to pick up if they see no purpose of learning, and don't forget even if they get to be exempted, it is still required to set for MT B syllabus for \"O\" level.

oh i didnt know those who are exempted still needs to sit for MT in o levels... i thought they will be exempted forever?[/quote]No need to sit for O levels. Exempt means exempt forever.

Exemption is till Pre-U (officially). Anyway, it’s unlikely the child would require for University if the s/he didn’t take MT for PSLE and O level.

We still have not spoken to ds1 that his exempted from Chinese. Thinking how to tell him. He will definitely find out, since SA2 is coming.
Also, ds2 will definitely say \"not fair\" if he knows that gor gor don't need to take Chinese exam anymore.

According to the same friend i mentioned above, local universities still require Chinese B syllabubs exam \"pass\" grade, her son is sec 4 (IP). I will check with her again see whether the rule has changed since.

oh was bringing up about exemption from mt to my fren and she said exemption doesnt mean no more mt… it just means no written exam…

her ds dropped mt in p5 due to mt being the worst subject and it was approved. but she was later informed that she has to choose any language for her ds… according to her, the list includes thai, german, french, japanese, spanish… and in the end she chose french…

they were given a list of schools that offer that french class and her ds got to attend it like it were school, not like tuition where u can skip when u cant make it…

this is of cos from my fren, her exp… dunno if it applies to any parent here??

                You are right!

Just spoke the friend whose sons are exempted from MT. You are right. In IP prgm, there is no more offering B syllabubs, instead, they are to choose second lang instead.

So the exemption from MT is not due to learning disability? But just because MT is the worst subject. Otherwise, the child would most likely still face difficulties learning any other language.

my friend's ds exemption was not due to learning disability...

but she is a foreigner.. so i dunno if it is allowed for locals...

giving up chi but took french instead... to her french is easily cos she can coach a little... but chi she cant teach...

maybe for ur case, u should ask if ur ds needs to take another language if u choose to drop mt??? call moe to chk... the sch may not hv exact info..

MOE officer told me for medical reason, the child can be exempted from taking MT. However, for other reasons (like your friend's case) they have to take up other languages outside the school.

I just checked my MOE letter. It said exempted from MT primary level and continue to be exempted when he progress to Sec and Pre-U.
