Most of the tuition centres seem to be boasting that they hire only the experienced and MOE trained teachers........Does it mean some (not all) teachers are using school just to get the experience so that they will be well paid in the tuition centres???

i don't think teachers are using schools to get experience. Most of the younger teachers (fresh grads) are tempted into MOE bcos of excellent educational grants and high starting pay. So when they finish their bond, they will leave for greener pastures!

i agree... many of them just used that as a stepping stone...

There are some who remain as school teachers so as to command higher tuition fee, claiming they know the syllabus and what is 'expected'. Why not? Good pay for just 1.5 hours of 'talk'. For 1 subject at P6, it's $80.

$80/hr?!! We've been talking till cows come home and they are still not looking into this issue of moonlighting. Teachers' job is understandably demanding already, but with the private tuition, can we expect to get 100% from the teachers?
Spirit is willing but flesh may be weak .

they are overly priced!! simply just to increase the rate to show that they are better than the others...

current moe, ex moe or future moe teacher... what's the difference?? all we parents want is that our dc learns well in their hands..

to me, as long as the teacher is good with syllabus, and KNOWS HOW TO CONVEY TO MY DC, most impt...

i must say, everytime i see my niece teaching my dd, i find her so caring and passionate and patient to teach my dd, even though she may need to repeat a few times.. (my dd is a little slower in maths) sometimes, i may already know how to recide the formula but my dd still blur blur... but she patiently teaches her again w/o flaring... (unlike me) LOL...

see a young gal aged 20 can also have the kind of passion a teacher should have, but our dear current moe, ex moe or future moe teacher do not... gosh...

Many do not enter MOE with the right mind set. $80 for teaching 1.5 hours is good money. My friend was absolutely pissed with that teacher...she said she can teach all 3 subjects - English, math and science. Before starting, she told my friend she wants payment at the end of lesson.

No materials and wants my friend to inform her what to teach the next lesson :slapshead: Gosh, she calls herself a teacher but doesn't know what to teach student.

yes i believe ur friend's encounter as the same applies to mine..

that teacher said something like, \"i'm here to help ur son, u have to tell me which area he is weak in. i cannot prepare any materials because all of materials are from the school. u hv to give me ur materials..\"

            u see... moe teachers..

My friend hit the roof when that teacher told her those exact words :stompfeet: she told hubby she can't tolerate any longer but hubby told her to tahan.

I hit rock bottom today...wanted to cry it out. The frustrations these 9 months may be coming to an end next Tue, but i do not feel excitement, just anger.

My son told me he did everything his Math tutor has taught him and he could manage the entire Math exam. All these months of attending school (P6) did not teach him to solve Math, Science or English. I am not saying that my son ignores what his school teachers taught bcos he has tuition. But at age of 12, I believe he knows what is quality teaching.

Saw this article and thought it keeps things in perspective (for me) and so sharing it here. In the real world, life experiences, emotional maturity, empathy and lots of communication with sensible adults about their values, passions, and goals are more important.

For me, I will rather DD go to a secondary school with a good match with her ability and spend time developing the above than to a first tier secondary school and spending time at tuition.

As the world's income become increasing diverge, being able to make a difference in the world beyond academic becomes increasingly important in university admission's personal statement as well as at work.

made me recall my ds's teacher who was pregnant and took very long leave, i suppose 6-7mths.. she left hurriedly and no one knows why... maybe the teachers and principal knows but parents were not informed... the sch sent a relief teacher to teach thru the entire yr till after exams and the teacher is back... worse still, the relief teacher was changed 3 times throughout the period...

this is what poor management is...
Having relief teachers for a stretched period is a very common issue esp. for P3 and P4 classes, regardless of the popularity of the school concerned. The problem is exacerbated when the quality of relief teachers is extremely poor, to the extent of teaching the kids the wrong concepts, or these teachers having poor anger/stress/class management etc... we should pressure MOE to resolve this perennial problem first before talking about reducing the class size.

We have more qualified and psle ready tutors than school teachers. why not channel the money used for funding schools to subsidizing our tuition fees instead.
