my daughter also goes to berries 😄

she has been with berries since nursery.
whenever there is a change of teacher, due to new year, i will talk to the teacher before hand to advise her of my daughter's condition.
when she reached P1, i was talking to the teacher about her on the 1st term. then the teacher was quite funny, told me\" oh , you don't worry about her, i was her relief teacher a few times before during kindergarten , i know her pattern \" 😓 but my daughter loves going to Berries :rahrah:
She can't really speak chinese before going there , but now though her chinese pronociation is still quite off now and then, but i think her recognition of the words have improved alot. she actually got 29/30 for her CA2 :rahrah:
she also has an assistant teacher in berries during her class. both her teachers are very patient to her and also will pull her aside to teach her 1-1 when they notice that she needs help during the written assignment.
      :please:
Congrats chibi, you must be so proud!

        hi,

not that they don't allow. they dont suggest. when i first told them i am going to KK to do assessment, they didnt offer me their evaluation. until i expressed my concern over what can KK assess and conclude for my son so young, they suggested theirs and said it's not diagnosis, it's to identify areas for development in a more holistic way.

case manager said that if both kk and they use the same assessment tactic, it might distort the diagnosis result. say if my son has gone through theirs first, KK might give a diff opinion or distort the facts. that's why she implies. She said typically one year apart is better
        Kar kar
If u don't tell KKH that you have sent your boy for pte assessment, they won't know right? so why would kkh distort the facts? The possibility is that your boy may do better when doing the test for the second time within a short period. Cos they may remember what they had done previously. Or like slmkhoo said, your boy hates doing it the first time and will throw a fit if he sees that he has to do it again.

But like we mentioned previously, if you are visiting kkh for the first time, they will not do the assessment for you. The doc will just ask you some questions and observe him. You need to book another date to do the assessment. So no worries of going to the pte centre and at the same time, go for the kkh appoint as scheduled. The kkh schedule is not easy to fix, so better go, if not, is another long wait.

I still don’t get it. I don’t see how the assessment by the private center will be distorted if you go for kkh assessment. Both are independent of the other, no? Unless they are cautioning you that the 2 assessments may differ & that may confuse you. But I also don’t see how far off the 2 reports can go. If its not a diagnosistic test, I don’t see why you can’t go ahead for the kkh one as well. If both are just assessments to help determine the type of therapy your son needs, then I think it’s okay to go for both. That way, you are more informed, you can make better decisions. And yes, get in to kkh first is a wise choice- wait time is a killer.

good for you chibi. I havent seriously started my daughter on chinese though she can name a few things in chinese. sigh, this is one of the gaps that bothers me, amid several others.

sometimes I have the feeling that I am always playing catch up, and hard as I try, still cannot catch up ...

I totally agree with all mummies here. It's the nature of the person. If out of 3 teachers, 2 were there and gave no notice to all these distressed kids, that's pretty bad yah...

It really takes time to find a good school with good teachers. not easy. My neighbour also had a terrible experience with CC. omg, i couldn't believe that those bad experience is so near me, my friend and my neighbour.

Mummies, i have another doubt in my mind now. I engaged a private centre to do clinical assessment on my son this coming Thu. case manager told me that if we go through the evaluation with them, we can't go to KK , which is on 11 Oct. They both use the same method to assess the kid. She was very frank and said it's not ethical to do that. She warned me before choosing them.

reasons to go for private assessment: 1) i dont need a diagnosis or confirmation now since my son is 2 and he's not very obvious. most likely KK would say can't diagnose too young, come back at 4. 2) i am using the same centre for future therapies. this evaluation they perform will give them and us more direction on how to help my son. it's like setting the foot right before the start. hope it's more effective.

reasons to go for KK: 1) i am being Kiasu. Private is expensive, i set a target of 1 year for this expensive private intervention. but what if it is not working out well?? when my son turns 3 or 4, the long term private intervention will drain my family, slowly i need to send him to gov intervention, since cheaper or possibly future subsidy. Usually they have long wait list. so i can get the diagnosis first and queue up first. 2) it's cheaper to sign up for KK's Henan program and possibly other parent training program.

              I need advice. Thanks.
sorry kar kar, am a bit confused on what you are trying to achieve with 2 clinical assessments. and by clinical assessment I understand you are referring to the assessment for a diagnosis on autism (done by psychologist), not assessment on the areas that need therapy support (done by therapists). The purpose of a clinical assessment is so that you can use the report to apply for EIPIC or special schools where applicable. Why would you need two such assessments?

In my own circle of parents with ASD children, I have not come across parent who does two clinical assessments one almost immediately after another. I am also not sure whether any parents at this forum do that. Yes, there will be one IQ assessment at about 5yo for school placement options, but this is usually well spaced out from the initial diagnostic assessment, if one is done. While financial resources may allow 2 assessments, you may want to conserve some energy as it will be long drawn.

The usual practice whether you go government and private is to see the paediatrician first and then get advice and referrals on what to do next. In the meantime, you can always get an assessment (from therapists) on the specific areas that need therapy and work on those areas first.

Just wondering whether you are thinking too far ahead too soon. While its good to pre-empt and think ahead, many a time its dealing with the unknown and moving targets.

Sorry dont mean to sound harsh, but I dont wish to see a fellow parent go through unncessary pain.

              JMHO.

Hi Thanks for your comments. its from your kind heart to remind me of whats necessary. No, i didtn' mean to go through the two, so i needed to pick either one of them. thats why i have confusion on which one to pick. as i explained further in other post, if another assessment is needed, it's one year after the first one.

did i confuse the mummies here? sorry.

thats also why case mgr said if i choose to KK, she wont offer the clinical assessment in her centre. it's binary, either one, KK or Private. She mentioned to me last time some parents asked the centre to practise the assessment content in therapies before KKHs assessment so to prepare their kids for KKH. She said that's against her morale.

                    Dear Mummies,

I think i am as confused as what it is. in the private centre, they call the 3-hr clinical evaluation, not clinical assessment. from case manager, she said their evaluation is more on developing plans where KK is more on diagnosis.

I think the key to the confusion is whether the 3 hr clinical assessment is 1) to determine your son has autism or 2) to help you compose a therapy program he needs, I.e speech therapy, behavior therapy, social therapy etc. I suspect it’s the latter. You should call up the center to clarify this. One sure way is to ask with whom you’ll be meeting. Is it a psychologist? If so, then it’s for sure the test is an autism test.

If it’s an autism test, I.e to determine If he’s on the spectrum, then you need to decide whether you want to do it with the private center or kkh, like what immeemee said. But if you choose kkh, the autism test may not be immediate, might even take up to a year. So the question is whether you need to know if he’s on the spectrum like now, now. If yes, then do it with the private center, meaning go for the thu appointment (assuming it’s an autism test) & ditch the kkh appt.

But if it’s an assesement I.e to help you identify the therapy program, then go for the appt on thu And stick with the kkh appt on 11oct. Because autism test is much cheaper if you do it there as subsidized patient. Otherwise you have to pay like $2000 just for the autism test at private centers.

Hope it help to sort out your thoughts?

                        Hi Blokus

I just clarified with the centre. its actually both. this comes diagnosis but they emphasize on how to plan for therapies. they are more expensive than KKH for sure. Yes, it’s psychologist session. I dont actually need an diagnosis. I only pick the private session for the fact that their psychologist is able to give a more detailed plan on program planning.

now actually i get a bit nervous as it gets closer to Thu. I know my son should be somewhere in the spectrum but for a psychologist to confirm that, it saddens me. I will try my best to be strong.
