FYI, My sister was actually accepted to SAJC via DSA but in the end, she scored L1R5=21, so can't get in (must <20) She wanted some good courses in Poly like Biomedical Science but didn't managed to get in. Now, she say things like \"She rather get RP's biomedical science and get the diploma\" last time she looked down on RP but now she wants it. Because she say MI students are really not very motivated to study and she prefer those Group Work or Project style environment. She say that perhaps they just lack the motivation to study as most of them think they are those who can't make it so they go to MI rather than JC.
Anyway, she also regret lah.. :gloomy:

Regarding her combination, she is taking:
H2 Chemistry, H2 Mathematics, H2 Economics and H1 Art

Oh yea, my parents did not force her, but she can't get into JC nor her preferred course in Poly so she choose MI. (Her choice)

There are a lot of students were forced into MI because of their parents.

Another case is, the students only has 5 subjects..
Eg, my classmate who is planning to join MI next year, her O level subj are:
English, E. Maths, A. Maths, Science (Phy+Bio) and Comb Humanities (SS+Geography)
She also took CLB but it is NOT considered a subject.
She wants to go for A level education, so she has no choice except MI.

We will have just returned from overseas, and she has some learning issues, so we would like her to have 3 yrs to adjust and prepare rather than 2. Her issues also make polys unsuitable as they requires too much independence and group work which she would find challenging. I guess we will have to deal with the motivation issues at home.

Hey. I'm currently studying in Millennia Institute. I'm in my second year, doing Arts. Well, I do have to say that Millennia has the entire spectrum of all sorts of students one could possibly think of. To define our students as \"stupid\", \"academically weak\", would be too narrow minded, i would say. one can't just go labelling things like cans of beans. it goes the same for any other school, really.


it's a completely different atmosphere in Millennia. rather laid back. i would attribute that to the mindset that many of us adopt. i personally believe that i am not defined by the grades in my report book. the measure for character goes well beyond academics.

why i'm in MI? i would say i didn't particularly like the subject combination i took in secondary school, leading to my rather abysmal grades for o levels. i didn't enjoy learning back then. (oh, excuses)

Millennia allowed me to pursue my passion for Humanities. The school's Arts department is excellent!! Also, The teachers in MI are the most passionate and genuinely caring i've ever had in my entire learning journey.

I just wanna say,
i'm rather grateful for having 3 years to prepare for A levels. because quite frankly, i would rather spend 3 years savouring my learning than rushing a heckload of materials in 2 years. i know i'd probably break down.

yeah, oh well,
i do have biased opinions about my school.
but i genuinely am enjoying my learning so far.

i'm making the best out of what i have .

I am in this school of myself for at least 3 academic years. True enough, MI's ranking may be the 'worst' in terms of L1R5, but I beg to differ from your perspective. I feel that MI is like a JC but 3 years course. 

For our 1st year, we took like a honeymoon period where we warm up our foundation right from the start to the next year. There is no PW till year 2 for us. Most of the content are covered in year 2 end. By the time when the cohort reaches its final year, only 1/3 made it to the final year; 2/3 left Poly/Private As. It shows how the school filter out potential qualified students to sit for final As in Year 3.

Given the last standing against all JCs, I feel that it is never a good indicator to prove the ability of the student. Given if the student is academically slower, the determination should come from the student themselves. 

I took Business course till I got to the final year. Many of us like me came to MI because of business offered courses for us. I used to think that MI has more opportunities than Poly, but frankly, I would say it depends. 

MI is like the other JC courses, and not everyone is fit to take the A levels course. Most students came in and take things lightly. To survive in MI or JC, you need resilience. To me, I feel that as long as the O level student is willing to get higher pursuits and is hardworking, why not give this school I try. 

That is my personal take.

I came from MI myself.


Teachers are good and very willing to help, frankly. Their PE teacher especially. I got silver for NAFA test for the first time thanks to them (and of course my own motivation).

Facilities are good, quite standard. Food is good, but i am not fussy.

Downside? Most of my friends were LAZZZYYYYYYYY and that is the main issue imo. If your child wants to go MI, make sure he or she mixes with the right people and, if not, is disciplined enough to keep him or herself on track. 3 years to do A levels for a disciplined student is like a free ticket to any university in the world (ideally). If not, I'd say poly is more worth it because A-Levels is do ->well<- or die.

That's about it, really.

Thanks, but I know about the 30% statistic. I don't think that getting into a school with a higher rate of university entry will help my daughter. She needs time if she is to have any chance at getting some 'A' levels, and MI is the only school that has a 3-year programme. For a variety of reasons, poly would not be suitable for her at 16yo, though I hope she might be able to cope by 19yo.

As a 20years old studying in MI myself, I don't think it is the age that determines how much the child can cope. Different child have different strength. If the child prefer theory based than practical, then MI/JC will be a better choice for them as it will empathize more on theory than practical based. My personal take will be business subject such as Management of Business, Accounting which is much more interesting than other common subjects.

Hi all, I am currently a student who has graduated from Secondary School in year 2015 after taking my Os on the same year. I got D7 my English and Combine Humans (SS +history) but both my L1R4 and L1R5 are still below 20 after deducting CCA points. I wonder if there is any chance of me being able to get into a JC or Millennia Institute despite failing English. I know that the doors of JC are shut and I could hardly appeal for it if I got D7 for my English. The reason that I wanted to take A levels after this is that I feel that I am capable of studying and giving JC or MI a shot. I think my performance for my English for my O level was not an accurate measure of my usual skills as English was one of the first few papers that I did in O level. Furthermore Combine Humanities is a tough subject especially it’s a combination of SS and history thus it is the norm to fail it in in my usual exams in school. I know that it is hard for me to be able to get into JC now but I wonder if i could still try Millennia Institute. A friend told me that I am still able to get into Millennia Institute as long as my L1R4 is below 20 although she is unsure whether I could still get in if i failed my English. I have considered retaking my O level English and probably Humanities this year so that I could have better choices to make. I have heard that it is possible for Millennia Institute to accept such students if their L1R4 is below 20 and they can re-sit for their English O level paper and if they met the criteria they’ll be able to stay in the school.

I don’t know much about MI as I seldom heard any teachers talking about it, I knew about it only on the day of the release of Os result. I went home to research about it and it feels like a place for those students who didn’t do as well for their O level to get into JC but wanted to pursue their Education to A level.

So basically my Os result was:
English: D7
Combine Humans: D7
Chinese: A2
Combine Science: A2
A Maths: B3
E Maths: B4
Design and Technology: B3

My L1R5 (before deducting CCA points): 21
L1R5 (after deducting CCA points): 19
L1R4 (before deducting CCA points): 17
L1R4 (after deducting CCA points): 15

I got A2 for my CCA so could I still minus my CCA points which is 2 points when I sign up for Millennia Institute as like any other JC/Poly?

I think the situation is this: For MI, your gross L1R4 has to be <= 20, so on that score you are eligible; however, for conditional admission, that is to be allowed to re-sit the English O level whilst studying at MI, you have to have grades of A1 or A2 in all the R4 subjects. On this latter criterion you are ineligible. Please do check in the JAE 2016 information booklet or with MI directly though.
