i re-read your post and I believe I didn’t catch what you are saying earlier. Your point is “FB” is public but most people think that FB is their private life. My point was she is a public officer so she needs to adhere to the prescribed code of conduct, doesnt matter where/what. So I am wondering how about personal blog which is available for all to view?

my private and public personas are different. Even my private persona to my parents is different from my private persona to my wife, which is different from what it is to my children. How can it not be? I am a son to one, a spouse to the other, a father to the last.

When I am at the office I will adhere to the code of conduct expected at the office. I do not adhere to that code of conduct at home, or I will never tickle my kids or sleep with my wife, would I?

Agree with this. There is no way we can be the same to everyone.

so i would concur that in each of our different role, we are able to express in a different manner. for her such behaviour of harbouring a thought against racism, she could openly express in front of her friends, in a private group, but certainly not publicly...

Yes, that's kinda my view. In a sense even amongst friends I may be a little cautious about being outright frank. But FB is an absolute no-no. There are grades of privacy. What you say or do with your spouse is perhaps the most private. Certain office matters are P&C with the weight of law behind it. email is somewhat private, but is discoverable and POTENTIALLY public. Likewise your speech and behaviour in a group setting where someone may be secretly taping you, somewhat private but POTENTIALLY public. FB and internet blogs are discoverable and to all intents and purposes, are PUBLIC, in my view. The article in the press about \"Why are we so rude online\" gives some insight into internet boorish-ness and the dangers thereof.

So, my view is that although one may harbour racist thoughts in private, or even express those thoughts to close friends/relatives, that is not grounds for dismissal.

Going public with those views (and make no mistake, FB is public), puts you at the mercy of your employer, and possibly the law.

But you are essentially the same person. Say for instance, your belief in one thing is the same, no matter who you are talking to. What I mean being the same person is I don't say one thing to eg ksp folks but in real life I am not. It doesn't mean that you guys don't know who I am and therefore I paint a different picture of myself and say things that I would not in real life.

Yes, but you will be more restrained or more expressive over the same issues, depending on who you are with.

I had a neighbour who burns incense paper very frequently in their garden. And they will not just burn in a bin but they will use a stick to stir whatever they are burning and flames will shoot up and ashes will be flying all over. With DH I will rant, bloody stupid #*($&%), blah blah blah. But when I bring this issue up with other neighbours, I tone it down, I understand that it is their believes/religion but there should be a better way to go about it, blah blah blah.

Then, I think what we are saying is the same, 3boys. Just that you have added another dimension - the different roles we play n our life. For my posts above, I didn’t dissect who I am into the roles I play in my life. While what I say maybe a little different in terms of the words or tone used, but essentially I am saying the same thing.

But you are still saying the same thing, or rather your view is still the same. Just that how you present the idea is different. And the words chosen are different. Using this as an example, what I am saying would be I shouldn't be telling one thing to my hubby ($&@? Neighbour) but another thing to other neighbors ( oh ok la, never mind...).
