Alamak you make me feel like I have amnesia. Must dig out my report book to check .
Hmmm...cannot be leh. It's a subject by itself but the score with be part of the Eng subject. It should be the same in all schools. Anyway, other than the languages, there are only Math, Sce, Geog and Hist...the other 2 donch really have to do anything. -

Not sure. Normally, I'll just drop a email asking if the result is below benchmark and how is the rest of the class performing (to assess if it's a difficult ppr or not). Then ask if they will arrange remedial for the weaker students or not. Most of the time they will try to do something, eg, give extra worksheet and run thru with kids 15 min before assembly.
does the teacher conduct remedial lessons regularly when there's a need or only when it's near to exams? If not, then we can see why there's such a need for external coaching.
I don't know coz my DS goes for only Chinese remedial and it's usually when exam's round the corner , it's optional also. -

I remember in Sec 1 we did English, Chinese, Math, Science, Lit, History, Geography, Home Econs. Lit was a separate subject from English. And third language as well.
Really. I remember sec1 I had English, Lit (result combined with Eng but still a subject), Chinese, Math, Sce, Geog, Hist, Art & Tech.Lilac66:
During my sec days, I remember I had only 7 subjects leh -

There is one other avenue we have to teach our DCs, and that is to ask their classmates. Children learning from each other sometimes learn faster. But sorry just asking coz when we discuss about self-learning skills for kids of such age, what type of skills are specifically looking at or inculcating?
For discussion sake, we'll use MAths since this is one area where parents have most grouses about- say a child is not able to grasp the model concept for in class, what does he do? Ask the teacher in class or get help from parents. What if the child is not able to clear his doubts either because the teacher is has got too much on her plate to attend to him personally or the parents are not sufficiently equipped to help him? What should he or we parents do if we want to inculcate self-learning attitude? Let's presume the child does not have tuition. -
Times have indeed changed…I know of a friend who has a wonderful and dedicated hubby who follows kids’ education closely. Dedicated mum herself…she fetches kids to & fro regardless of dismissal time, cuts out newspaper articles and coaches her kids in Chinese. Hubby is not always in Singapore…he would work on kids’ Math problems and then login, skype to coach. SUPER !!! From this wonderful daddy, I learnt how to pin point my son’s weakness this year.

I did think about it, but I feel children will not be able to explain that clearly to their friends (at least at pri level).Lilac66:

When my DS tries to explain how he got the answer to a tough maths quest (yes, some questns I have to ask him when I look through his work), I'm still as clueless. Luckily DS has this innate ability for Maths or I do not think my DH and I can help much. -

There are others who can be asked - friends, uncles etc. But one thing that many don't do is read the textbook. I know that the more complicated models are not in the textbook, but if the issues are with the basics, then the textbook is a good start. There are also lots of guidebooks for different types of models.
Thanks it's a good suggestion though I suspect most likely parents will have to buy the books, read it to understand before teaching the kids.
My DH has to source for Science books to help my DS.. and to go through with him how questions are to be answered in order not to get penalised during exams... <sigh>Parents' involvement is so crucial in today's education system. -
some of the Sci tuition questions are so tough :slapshead: ... one day i'm going to ask dd to approach her sch teacher to help on the tuition questions.... maybe during her P6.. :nunchuk:
