Tightening a screw ain't engineering, it's called a household chore.

Depends on whether that screw is part of a $10 ikea chair or $1mil equipment in a class 100 cleanroom.

But designing the $1mil equipment (and the cleanroom) can be done anywhere else in the world.

If you read the HWZ thread on construction sector.. you get more information.

Without supply of cheap labor, companies are forced to improve productivity, which is only good in the long term. Such as investing in equipments etc..
But that is actually reducing the FWs, not the PMET FTs.

Remember when I suggested that Fw is welcomed, because there are lesser and lesser SCs that want to do these jobs in the first place, due to the increasing education level of SCs. I also suggested that a min wage be put in place. That will help the SCs and the FW in these jobs to have a decent std of living. But for PMET positions, there should be enuf SCs for most of the jobs. For those jobs that really cannot find SCs, then FT is allowed. Be it FW or FT, it must be Citizens 1st. If cannot find then look for FW or FT. Plenty of countries have this policy. This will also prevent the situation that the SMEs are facing - cut in FW quotas in jobs that SCs will not do. This also called NIMBY?

And please, obviously not voting for all big and small decisions. Again it’s the all or none attitude. MAJOR policies only. The European countries had national polling to decide if they wanted to join the EU/ euro zone. It is common in democratic countries to have voting for major national policies that determine the countries future directions. If I recall correctly, decision to open the floodgates to foreigners was not even debated in parliament. SCs only woke up one day to realize that there were suddenly that there were people every where and we suddenly became the minority in office and in our own country.
Accountability for the decisions makers? The person who made the wrong decision to stop building flats, and causing the HDB flats to skyrocket beyond the reach of most young Singaporeans is just happily retired, still getting $16k per month. There was no admission of mistake whatsoever till today. What accountability?

No, this is not what they have. The policy they have is that employers who want to employ foreigners must show that the foreigner possess special skill. What constitutes 'special skill' varies with economic needs. It means tighter FW control and looser FT control, which is the complete opposite of what you are advocating.

Not every European country held a poll to join the Euro. And of all those who abided by the majority ‘people’ vote, how many are regretting now?

You think a referendum is protection against bad decisions?

That is just the politically correct way of saying \"I don't want to know about it\".

I am saying similar policies, can't the million dollar ministers and quarter million senior servants tweak it to SG context? Special skill could be chef, carpenter, plumber, construction builders? And for jobs like cleaners, if they advertised for x number of weeks with a pay higher than the min wage, then they allowed to hire FWs if no SCs respond. There are countries with similar policies. Bottom line is, look at what Singaporeans want and what the businesses need.

And if the 2 are in conflict?

You are proposing to eradicate the competition of the brainy ones; but Singapore is not alone in this world, Spore is competing with the world. Who stand to lose, when Singapore lose the edge? Who is going to save us when Singapore goes into recession?

Btw, there are quotas for the hiring FT/FW vs locals, anyone cares to know? As far as I know, it's definitely not the 50% that you mentioned.

When I was in the work force, the quota was 1:10. It is never a floodgate.

(Actually, this statistic is available on MOM's website, enjoy reading!)

The HDB's price, it's determine by the market, everyone dreams of buying his flat at $195K and sell it at $1m 10 years later, no? Who to blame? I blame no one. The Housing Board is working so hard to keep the property market's balance. Those that won't sell their flat (an entitlement of SC) at a huge gain, you get my hugs.
