so what 3 criteria did he meet out of the 6? And for his iq, how many points did he get? i wonder how is IQ test conducted.
ASD kids also can have motor issues like motor planning and fine motor. My boy has fine motor issues, eg. he doesn’t know how to tear paper, instead of pulling it forward, he will pull the paper side way. But it is also improving, there are many things that he can’t do previously, he is slowly catching up now.
Your boy is doing very well already. He has not reached 3 right? My son is already 3.5, he will be due for P1 in 2.5 years time.
Actually until now, I am still thinking if I should send him to a mainstream primary or Pathlight. I had actually decided on mainstream until I met my ex-colleague yesterday. Her son is in P2 at Pathlight and doing well. Apart from speech which is slower than his peers, he doesn’t seem to have any other issues. Can make friends, able to cope with studies and no behaviour or sensory issues. My colleague said Pathlight is good and provides a very good learning environment for his son.
However, I am still tempted to let my boy try out mainstream and only if he can’t take it, then transfer him to Pathlight. But Pathlight has a long wait list.
For mummies whose kids are in mainstream, have u ever thought of sending your kids to Pathlight ? what makes u decide to let your kid go to mainstream? Care to share? -
Double E:
I haven't thought of pathlight at all honestly. Ok, maybe just a fleeting moment. Like u said, I rather let him try a mainstream school and if cannot cope then transfer. I don't want to take away the chance of mingling with other NT kids because of what I thought. It's his life. I really want it to be as normal as possible. And I'm happy that he's coping well and improving all the time.Helplessmum

Maybe is worthwhile for u to get a second opinion. If he is still progressing as well as you have mentioned, you can perhaps re-assess him when he is 3.5 years?
I feel that the most glaring sign that your son has that makes him very unlikely to be ASD is his interest to interact and play with his peers.
No doubt, there are ASD kids who are high-functioning and maybe with high IQ, but the common thread is that they are not interested to interact or play with their peers. That’s why we say ASD kids’ main problem is social impairment. But from what you have described, clearly, he doesn’t have this issue.
If you are to go for a second diagnosis and you tell the psychologist just like what you have told us here, there is a chance that your son’s ASD status may be revoked. -
Double E:
Double E, I am considering another approach, and that is a one-year deferment. This is really because I think that my daughter will benefit if I were to provide her with the rightful support for another year before I place her into primary school. Of course, I still hope that she can go mainstream school after that, but I am keeping all options open depending on how she develops.Helplessmum

The next question is then what to do during the one-year deferment. Currently I am looking into 2 options:
1. Preparatory track at Pathlight. This program offers a K2/P1 mixed curriculum and is a bridge between K2 and P1. After this program, decisions could then be made on whether to continue with Pathlight primary currciulum or to mainstream.
2. My daughter's current EIPIC centre offers preparatory classes at 3 levels, and my daughter is currently at level 1. She can still progress to level 3 during the year of deferment.
The idea is to continue to build on her foundation during the year of deferment, and not to repeat what she has been doing.
There are different schools of thought, and I am aware some parents feel that their children should go mainstream primary school when they reach the age milestone. But for me personally, I reckon that one year of additional support out of her whole lifetime will not do harm. In fact, it may do good, especially since we all know our children will bloom later. Its all about pacing, but to each his/her own. -

Thanks for sharing. My thoughts are the same.
But I can’t help but worry if he can cope with the stress since mainstream emphasize a lot on academic. And also school bully.
The same colleague has another P4 NT girl, at P4, the teacher is already stressing the students, telling them they have to prepare for PSLE. And she shared with me the Maths questions. I tell u, I almost fell off my chair. The maths questions are really tough, and the kids have to read between the lines. Not only do they need to be strong in Maths but language as well.
Seriously, all the Primary kids in Singapore are really suffering under our MOE system. PM Lee said we parents are Kiasu and that we should let our pre-school kids play more, how can we not be kiasu when MOE sets such a high bar for our kids? Unless all of us have gifted kids who can whiz through their studies without help. -

Yes, I heard of the primary preparatory programme in Pathlight. It is also in my plan to send my boy there before he goes to P1.
Have u found out about registration procedure? I wonder if is also a long wait list. -

mashy:
st andrew hospital has kkh cdu - where all their phyocologist there. most kkh cdu child will be diagnoised at that location.. just like their therapist at hbp.And why was he diagnosed by kkh psychologist in st Andrew's hospital? Don't they diagnose cases in kkh itself?
Isn't st Andrew for children above 7 yrs old? Wouldn't a 3 yr old be better assessed in kkh that is meant for preschoolers? -

Thanks for sharing..that indeed very progressive.
He is currently 6 years old, in the afternoon session. There are about 6 others in his class, with 3 teachers and some volunteers.helplessmum3:
how old is your son? which group he is in, isit cohort group, is he in morning session or afternoon session.
what has your son learn so far, how u know he has progress?
Hrmmmm... as for his progress, when he was 3 years old, he ran around whenever he had the chance, spoke only a few words and was totally unregulated. Now, at 6+, generally he listens to instructions but knows who he can bully and \"override\", can sit down and work with me for about 2 hours at a stretch, talks alot, can read and write and do simple math. Of course, he still have his quirks and autistic and socially- inappropriate behaviour and other challenges.
I have to add that other than Rainbow, he also has a lot of classes and therapies. In fact, until recently, his mondays to saturdays were totally filled up with classes and therapies.
my son no therapist, im his only therapist. no choice, i no $ .
my son use to run about last time, now he can sit through and listen to teacher teaching..& attentive..
only when ask to stand in lines he has problem. like itchy butts.
