Hi all, I’m new here. My older son is going P2 next year while my younger son although due to enter P1 next year, I’ve to defer him for a year due to many learning disabilities.
I didn’t want to give him unnecessary stress as I feel this school’s standard to be really high! Still unsure if I want him to join his bro as this school doesn’t have the support that he needs.
I just realised that many exercise books that we purchased in P1 didn’t get used and in P2, we’re asked to buy them which i stupidly did so again. Guess, in P3, I’ll make sure i count my 'stock"!
Do we need to label the books again in P2 like we did in P1? -
Oh, also, I was wondering if anyone has heard of Horrible Science books? I bought some during the book fair in school and my son loves it! It’s suitable for 7-12yos. It’s an excellent way for kids to learn through humor and wacky ideas. Read that the horrible books are award winning and great for gifted children. Humor at it’s best while kids unknowingly learn a great deal.
However, the books don’t come cheap at $16/book or $12.80 after 20% discount.
I’ll like to place an order from USA at US$60 for a set of 20, after freight and all, prob it’ll come up to S$135 for it or S$6.75 a book. Anyone interested? Maybe the more we order, the price may go even lower to $125 because of the combined freight.
Let me know soon as the price given is promotional and prob will end before x’mas or whilst stock last. -

I wish I had known this at the start of the year! I never even knew there'll be exams since many schools have stopped SA1 in P1!For all parents of next year P1 at Pei Hwa, my advice is do not take semester 1 as the honeymoon period IF you are concerned about which class your child will get streamed into P2.
A neighbour who regarded semester 1 as honeymoon kindy days got a shock now that she knows semester 1 and semester 2 exams combined results meant her bright boy is streamed into Kindness. Her boy actually scored near 100 for SA2.
However, I noticed at prize giving that many kids from one of the same class got 10 top in school. I guess teachers that taught that class does matter isn't it? Esp since the teachers are in control of how to set their own class teaching materials.

My son is going to P4 next year.
Don’t know why he used quite a bit of single line & medium square exercise books this year. Usually I do not buy all the stationery listed, or else I will reduce to just 1/2 the amt stated in the booklist. If insufficient, will get my son to buy during recess. Kids usually get priority than parents who have to queue in line.
My daughter is due for P1 registration next year. Hubby & I in a dilemma where to register her - Phase 1 (same school as bro) or Phase 2A2 (my old school which has an affiliated secondary school). -

There is NO honeymoon period at Pei Hwa.
I don't know if there is any change to the system for P1 now. There is CA1 not long after CNY, and after that preparing for SA1.
Consistent revision is very important. I remember one year (2008) when the exam time-table came out 2-3 weeks before the oral exam started. It was madness :shock: bcos it was Show-N-Tell for English and it had to be memorized.
I start revision 1 month (depending on level) before CA/SA. The 1 week before the exams are for past year exam papers. -

I'm super laid back type so other than chinese tuition, DS either plays or draws or does his own things at home (yes, even now!) I tried giving him some really last minute assessments to try out and he said he didn't know how to do and asked me to do it instead. So I asked, \"who are you going to ask during exams?\" He said \"i'll ask my teachers\". :stupid: Am I too lax?
His form teacher was very nice though and said the kids are so innocent so she made it a point to go kid to kid to make sure they complete every page (incase of carelessness) and left nothing empty. -

If your affiliated secondary school is a good one, then you should consider that option. The discount given for entry after PSLE is rather generous! What may be 250 for the \"general entries\" may be only 220 for the affiliated primary school! They generally prefer to admit the current kids than new kids. Personally, even 10 points is a good discount and the kid has higher priority over another child with the same points.

I've to make sons wear skirts to go to my old school :oops: I don't mind that but I think they mind it plenty haha -

I think there are many factors to consider when you decide whether to register same school as bro or mummy's ex school with affiliation, rather than a simple reduction of cut-off points. For example,
1) Logistics - having both children in the same school reduces quite some logistics (also, you probably know the teachers and staff of the bro's school more than teachers and staff of your ex-school; but then sometimes it is nice to have the experience of another school too)
2) Adjustment - also, it's good to have an elder sibling in the same school for the younger one, e.g. easier for the younger one to adjust, etc.
3) Location - is your old school closer to or further from home? I think it doesn't make sense if the brother takes 10 minutes to go the school and she takes 45 minutes.
4) Values of schools/CCA - would you prefer one school than the other because of certain values a particular school promote? Or CCAs or niche areas a particular school has?
As for cut-off point, yes, 10-30 points off is really attractive. Less stress in preparing PSLE. However, some parents told me that if their children have been laxed because of the cut-off points, then even if their children got in because of the lower cut-off points, the same children may not be able to cope as well in that secondary school. Of course, someone else may say that you can always chiong all the way for PSLE even if you have an affiliated sec school, and the lower cut-off point is just a \"safety-net\", a \"just-in-case\". Then think again, if your child has been working really hard for PSLE and then still scores low (below \"normal\" COP but higher than \"affiliated\" COP), will the child be able to cope with the higher standards in that affiliated school?
I remember Chief said in one of his postings (no plagiarism here!): focus on preparing your child for her primary school education (instead of worrying about COP too much). Teach the child to fish rather than fish for the child. It is a long journey in education! All the best in your decision :D! -

Many of my girlfriends did consider a lot too and in the end, the boys go to PH/ACS/Nanyang and the girls to girls schools like MGS. One of the mom has 3 kids all in 3 different schools to meet the needs of each child and she's the only driver!
I guess if I've a girl, I'll choose to put her in a girls school instead of mix to be with her bro as they're not going to meet up at all because of the hours even during recess. The boys are rather naughty and distracting. Enjoyed the process of growing up in a girl's school, we didn't get to be bullied and irritated by boys like my naughty husband

Wow, kudos to that mom who has 3 kids all in 3 different school! :salute: I bet she has to commit full-time to raising her 3 kids! heh heh, I beg to differ. I would rather my daughter go to a mixed-school in primary and a girls-school in secondary. I feel that it introduces more \"diversity\" in her education experience. Ha ha, she just has to learn how to deal with (and ignore) disruptive boys!!
. Then again, there are also very sweet boys around too, so that should be a good balance!
