I think somedays they need to find that rhythm in them? My son had to jump on every strip on the pavement. Even tip toe to get pass it. Extremely frustrating when we are in a rush. Argh.
Maybe it's just one of the off days, we have off days too and want to do things a bit differently. Maybe tomorrow he'll be fine again. Cheer up! -
Gifts from Heaven:
He is 5 and has been taking phonics lessons for 2 yrs.
My daughter was like that. But how old is your child, and how bad is it? Does he know any phonics?slmkhoo:
Hi mummies,
Anyone has kid who can read but cannot spell?
If yes, what do you do?
My daughter learned to read by sight without being taught to read, and didn't learn phonics. She has some auditory processing difficulties, so at the age most kids learn phonics (preschool) she was not very able to discern different sounds by breaking down words, nor was she able to take individual sounds and blend them readily. She read normally and was quite an advanced reader for her age, and although not much of a talker, her diction was fine too except for a few more difficult sounds that she only mastered around 7yo. I didn't bother too much about it until she reached school age, then started teaching her phonics 'backwards', if you know what I mean. Instead of using individual sounds to blend into words, I taught her to break words into inidividual sounds and the letters associated with them. That works for a lot of words, but not all, and for the 'sight' words, she just memorised. She wasn't in English school until P4 so I don't know how she would have coped in Singapore school, but by P4 she was on par with everyone else.
He can read and blend. Just that the phonics teacher said he refused to spell. I'm not sure if it is 'cos he can't spell that's why he refused to do it. When it comes to the academics, this boy of mine just gives up totally when he finds it hard...sigh!
Any suggestions to get him to spell?
I think 5 yrs old is still so young. If he doesn't want to spell, it's really no big deal lor. Maybe u can try with games instead. When he first started spelling, we used scrabble pieces to spell. My boy hates writing. We also used those boggle pcs and played games with it.
My boy also tends to give up at first sight of obstacle. We have to keep encouraging him and tell him that hard work pays off. We showed him eg of his sis learning to walk and if she gave up when she kept falling, she would never walk. When he overcome any obstacle, we praise him profusely. We want to let him know that with hard work, he can do it. He's now a bit more positive and will not give up as easily. -

Pls don't say this, when u spend more time at the consultation room with the drs, u also need to pay more. Time is money. Can u imagine if they don't charge anyone for taking up their time? They won't have money to bring home to feed their family. How would u like it if u are on hourly rate and your boss only pay you 7hrs when you actually worked for 7.5hrs?When yr girl therapy w kkh now? Ya very expensive I paid 300++++ plus charge me addition time for her time answering my questions ..
