can i rant? just when i say my boy is turning better, he acting out again today.. suddenly refuse to cross the road at the traffic light . ask him why he dun want to say. after 3 rounds of green man then he cross. then next while crossing the zebra crossing, a car stop for us and he sat down and refuse to cross. really dunno whats wrong with him today.

he knows is wrong to do all these and yet he doesnt cooperate. argh...

I think somedays they need to find that rhythm in them? My son had to jump on every strip on the pavement. Even tip toe to get pass it. Extremely frustrating when we are in a rush. Argh.

Maybe it's just one of the off days, we have off days too and want to do things a bit differently. Maybe tomorrow he'll be fine again. Cheer up!
Hi mummies,

Anyone has kid who can read but cannot spell?
If yes, what do you do?

My daughter was like that. But how old is your child, and how bad is it? Does he know any phonics?

My daughter learned to read by sight without being taught to read, and didn't learn phonics. She has some auditory processing difficulties, so at the age most kids learn phonics (preschool) she was not very able to discern different sounds by breaking down words, nor was she able to take individual sounds and blend them readily. She read normally and was quite an advanced reader for her age, and although not much of a talker, her diction was fine too except for a few more difficult sounds that she only mastered around 7yo. I didn't bother too much about it until she reached school age, then started teaching her phonics 'backwards', if you know what I mean. Instead of using individual sounds to blend into words, I taught her to break words into inidividual sounds and the letters associated with them. That works for a lot of words, but not all, and for the 'sight' words, she just memorised. She wasn't in English school until P4 so I don't know how she would have coped in Singapore school, but by P4 she was on par with everyone else.

He is 5 and has been taking phonics lessons for 2 yrs.
He can read and blend. Just that the phonics teacher said he refused to spell. I'm not sure if it is 'cos he can't spell that's why he refused to do it. When it comes to the academics, this boy of mine just gives up totally when he finds it hard...sigh!
Any suggestions to get him to spell?
I think 5 yrs old is still so young. If he doesn't want to spell, it's really no big deal lor. Maybe u can try with games instead. When he first started spelling, we used scrabble pieces to spell. My boy hates writing. We also used those boggle pcs and played games with it.

My boy also tends to give up at first sight of obstacle. We have to keep encouraging him and tell him that hard work pays off. We showed him eg of his sis learning to walk and if she gave up when she kept falling, she would never walk. When he overcome any obstacle, we praise him profusely. We want to let him know that with hard work, he can do it. He's now a bit more positive and will not give up as easily.

When yr girl therapy w kkh now? Ya very expensive I paid 300++++ plus charge me addition time for her time answering my questions ..

I thought no charge u know later I see bill gosh she add in half hr more charge . $$$ face !
Pls don't say this, when u spend more time at the consultation room with the drs, u also need to pay more. Time is money. Can u imagine if they don't charge anyone for taking up their time? They won't have money to bring home to feed their family. How would u like it if u are on hourly rate and your boss only pay you 7hrs when you actually worked for 7.5hrs?

Hi,
I have actually registered him for a mainstream primary as well as sent him for assessment at Pathlight. If he is eligible for PL, I should be placing him there because I feel that he'd be much happier there. Of course I do worry abt discrimination in the future. However, I think his happiness now comes first; as for the future, who knows what may happen. If he's able to improve socially, pple wouldn't care that he was in PL. So unless he improves dramatically during these few months.....

Anyway, FYI, there will no longer be a preparatory track in PL. There will however be a \"foundation primary one\" (for students who needs more help) and \"standard primary one\". Thus, some 7 year-olds may have to do 2 years of Primary 1. No more admission for 6 yo.

Arielmermaid

Thanks for the information. It takes a lot of courage to take the less travelled path, with the additional pressures to face potential criticism and discrimination. I applaude you for that.

Yes, at the open house they told us that the preparatory track will be changed to a foundation program, but they said that besides the timing, the rest remains unchanged.

From what we heard, the preparatory track sounded like an independent track which could lead to either PL P1 or mainstream P1. Do you know whether this is the same approach with the new 'foundation P1', or whether students need to proceed to PL's 'standard P1' after finishing 'foundation P1'?

Hi,
Thanks for this. Sometimes, I'd have doubts if I'd be short-changing my son, especially during the days when he's like an angel. However, whenever I see how happy he is to go to Rainbow(vs his mainstream child care) and how different the teachers' attitudes in the institutions are, I feel that I have to let him have a happy childhood.... Anyway, I haven't received any notification from PL on the enrollment. If he doesn't get in there, I'd treat it as a message from God and let him go to the primary school, with a shadow teacher if the school allows. It'd be more mentally and emotionally taxing for him and me, not to mention financially draining!

From the briefing at PL, it appears that if deemed suitable, the children in \"foundation\" may be promoted to \"standard P1\" during the school term. Otherwise, the students in foundation would be promoted to standard P1 in the following year.

For my boy's mainstream pri sch, he has an AED attached to his class. This AED is with the class for maths and English and she will make sure my boy does his work etc. I don't need to pay a cent. She's like a shadow teacher during lesson time. My greatest worry when he first started sch was more of the unstructured time like recess when there is no supervision and he doesn't have a routine to follow to. I pv with the sch for the first two weeks during recess and once weekly after that to check on him. The form teacher has somehow put to the children to watch over him during recess time. So someone will always be eating with him. End of recess, if he doesn't appear in the hall, someone will go and get him from the canteen. His best buds now are his recess pals who eat with him, even share food with him and play with him. 😄

Perhaps when looking for a mainstream school, u can check on the level of support they have for special needs kids. In my boy's sch, there are a lot of AED staff.

Haha, I have now mastered the high level of thick skin already. I don't care that my son is screaming and crying on the floor. I simply walk to him and tell him firmly to stop the nonsense and I will start counting. He will usually try to calm himself down after that. I'm also practicing that on my NT gal now. Lol. But think my gal more difficult to handle. Sigh.

Yesterday, the two kids were creating such a din at the back of the car, screaming and shouting at each other. I had to tell them to keep quiet till we reach home. They immediately shut up. 😉 guess it's also a good thing that they are scared of me. I'm the stern mummy who won't think twice about beating their butts.

Lavendery. Yrs such a long wait . I remember u come to this forum thE same time as me?

How is yr girl doing now ? Is she still w leap frog?

U r right some therapist are kind. I see rainboW therapist gotten knock by a child nose bleed she still did not show anger. If me who gotten knock so badly I will accidentally kick the child due to human nature in defense .

Few months back my son accidentally knock on his teacher I tell the teacher is ok my son don't feel the pain. Guess what she replies , she say he no pain I pain u know.. I say sorry to her
My girl OT used to be at HPB at Outram. But I find that no much use so I stopped after going there for 1mth. Anyway they go by blocks also. Then ARC called me up last mth saying got vacancy so my girl just started at ARC end of last mth. But ARC do not have ST and OT 😞

So I still have to continue her ST at Leapfrog. For OT, I will just bring her to playground, cut cost. She is improving slowly. Now can start asking questions, request for things. Can start to express herself and talk about her surroundings.

I also noticed that mainstream teachers are less tolerance towards kids with special needs. But I cannot blame them cos they were not taught how to handle such kids. My girl faced some discrimination in certain ways. But no choice, I can only afford to send her to mainstream nursery.

She is still seeing DAN but not really on a frequent basis. Got money then go.
It's usually just eating supplements for healthier body. I think continuous therapies and practicing at home is still the best solution for our kids to improve. There's no quick easy method. It's a marathon.

I'm so worried about mine! ONE AED who specialises in Dylexia. I called her twice to meet up with her and the VP (who is supposed to call me on the allocation of classes) and she assured me that the VP will arrange the meeting with me by October latest...till now...nothing!

Anyone whose kid has a very short focus in group setting and any tactics to counter this?
