I can totally understand how you feel cos my ds (P4) also eats very slow, about 45min. It will be worst if he's eating alone. As he gets distracted easily, with anything/everything.

Even with a carrot (to play iphone/ipad/wii/TV... etc)
It really depends on his mood. If he wants, he can finish within 20min.
We told him, he will suffer next time with he goes NS... but he still eating slowly 😞
I really hope there's a more effective way to get him to eat faster.

Kids that eat slowly has a disadvantage. Parents can let the child spend one hour eating the food, but think, if your child is in preschool, do you think the teacher will wait only for that slow eater to finish the food while the rest of the children have finished theirs? Your child will be missing out on a lot of things. Start training the child to eat fast between 5 to 6 years old, as you are helping the child to adapt to Primary 1's recess time.

Good point on adapting to pri 1 recess time. But I feel that starting to train at 5or6 yrs old is a little late. My child has been keeping to the 30min meal time since he was three. No one hr meal for him, I got no time.

My dd used to take 30 to 40 mins to finish her meal but now it took her 20mins. If she has tuition class on weekday after school dismissal, she only take 10 mins to finish her dinner as she doesn't want to be late for her class. By the way, she is P1 this yr.

My ten year old has greatly reduced time spent on lunch from 45min to 20min. After I dangle the minecraft carrot . I told him I give him 45min lunch time. The earlier he finishes, the more time he has on minecraft. Actually I gave him an hour include bathing.

Dinner time he still takes an hour. I realised tthat he is odd in the sense that he eats faster and more when he is not focused on eating. Ie he eatsfaster when he watches tv or listen to radio. So after all of us had finished eating, I gave him his mp3 and to listen while he eats.

My elder dd used to eat really slowly. She can seat there like 2 hrs! Fainz. She also frequently complains of stomach pains. So my naturopath recommended giving her probiotics daily. After a few weeks, I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel! She started to eat better and faster. Apparently the probiotics helps to improve appetite. She no longer complains of stomach pains too. Finally we can stop wasting time on eating and spend those precious time doing something else 🙂

I give her this, in case any mummy is keen, recommended by my naturopath:

Hey 1 hour is almost normal for any child to eat. You can prompt him to be faster but cannot force him. As he grows he will himself start eating fast.

Wanted to share this. 3 new studies conducted on probiotics just revealed some new health benefits:

Three new studies out this week show that probiotics are effective in maintaining health from the top to the bottom of the digestive system, with benefits beyond traditional digestive complaints.

Guess the type of food also plays a part. My ds eats healthy home cooked food slowly but gobbles up hawker favourites like duck rice, chicken rice etc in 5mins. Looks like we need to sign up for restaurant style cooking classes. But I hate using MSG…

Me too - esp when my gal starts her P1 this year. Making her eat breakfast is really a headach.
