      tutormum:
Scholarships were given to students whose parents could ill afford to give them an Uni education. That's what scholarships meant to me in the past. Now, scholarships are given freely to anybody regardless of whether they are citizens or hardship cases. What's the purpose? Nobody knows except Ah Gong. 🤷

Ah Gong can make better use of this money by giving more 'ang pows' to CITIZENS - true blue needy ones and improve the lives of CITIZENS who will definitely serve the country in return. Treating the 'adopted child' better than 'own children' definitely will result in own children leaving home. No wonder so many have indicated their wishes to migrate if they are able to. :frustrated:
Those hawker centre cleaners and tissue sellers deserve more help than these so-called scholars. There are so many cases reported in the newspapers and so many suicide cases with some involving children. Anybody knows how Ah Gong has helped them, if any?

In fact, as his family is well to do, why grant him the scholarship? :stompfeet:  :stupid: Why throw pearls to swines? :siao:

People always don't know/see the junction that he did not take.... or the path he is not on....

(What's the contribution can bring forth to the nation, $110K for a scholar and a distressed tissue paper seller? Let's do the math... ah gong got do his math neh...)

Actually, I had a friend whom was a perm sec… 10 years back… he does not believe in charity, cos he thinks it’s the gov’s department…

but, each time he was in Newton FC, he couldn’t help it but buying tissue papers with his "red bull" (ten dollar note)…

If we become a welfare state, the tax payers will be paying for it… get that?

So, do it in your private capacity, (if you will…)

When was the last time you tip the waitress?

When was the last time you throw a ten dollar note into a busker’s cup?

If you with your compassion aren't doing it, why blame the gov?

Charity? How does the word spells? Can the nation afford it?

(How weird that people that don't do charity are the ones that are quick to blame the gov for not doing so.... shoot me, if i am wrong... )

The ones that do the charities, would never have blamed the gov... STRANGE?!

They just DO IT! No word utter....

Are you prepared to pay the higher income tax? 40% income tax? How about 20% GST? To supple the budget surplus for the welfare? They might be a good proportion of retirees that will be looking forward to 生果金 post retirement... instead of seeking to be active working members of the society?

                Are you willing?

Or, will it be better to buy their tissue papers at $2 and only donate as and when you feel like when the whatever-charity-shows air on channel 8? and get your share of ranting right about the gov isn't doing it's welfare job in KSP? And wait for the big profitable companies to donate their millions?

Will you be happy that the gov isn't spending your big tax monies on whatever you deemed you deserved, e.g., your children's education, your medicals, your HDB grants blah blah blah... instead of 40% budget annually goes to the welfare....

                Think first before you blame....

This is the sad reality of the world we live in. We live in a world where we worship superficial achievements and gloss over character and moral flaws. We can say whatever we want now, but this Alvin guy is going to be very successful and earn loads of money. And our kids are going to ask us why we are against it and why doing the right things may seem to be counterproductive to achieve success. My fear of God keeps me in check from doing dishonest and amoral acts; I just hope my children in the future will feel the same.

I fear what type of daughter-in-law I will be meeting :nailbite:

I have this belief that good deeds need not be publicised.

Since the last GE, I find more newspaper articles of how/what the Govt has helped/is helping/planning to help in xx areas.

I chanced upon this book title \"Does you children know you love them?\" at the bookstore the other day. I feel that the book title is very applicable in our system here - there are pple who do not know the Govt cares for them/do not believe the Govt cares for them.

There used to be a period when pple complained the system being rigid and do not give space for citizens to grow. Then when a problem arises, pple complain the system is slow to react/unhelpful.

Take for example, the case of the fallen tree that killed the NS man- complained Nparks not doing enough to check trees. Is it difficult for any person walking on the streets to call Nparks when they suspect a tree looks frail or unhealthy? Are pple aware of how many trees are planted islandwide and how many staff does Nparks have?

We all have a part to play, hopefully that role we take on are the active one, not sitting back n type at the keyboard to complain only.

I really need to keep my kids grounded…teach and explain to them that they are NOT the only ones living in this world…to respect themselves, their bodies and also others. It’s not a I-ME-ALONE world.
