      Hi,

I saw a question in the Shaping Maths 1B Activity Book Page 22. The question is basically asking how many ways you can divide 12 cards into equal groups. Other than 2 groups of 6, 6 groups of 2, 3 groups of 4, 4 groups of 3 and 12 groups of 1, should I also include also 1 group of 12 in the answer ? The reason I'm confused is because of the \"divide into groups\" and I'm not sure if 1 groupof 12 is considered the correct answer since the question asked for \"groups\" and not \"group\"

      Thanks!

Haha, I think the right concept is more impt than the right answers. I would include 1 group of 12 as the right answer, regardless of whether that is the model answer or not 🙂

But if the qn is asking to divide into equal groups, I would not include 1 group of 12. Because it is not about how to group 12 items. Is it possible to reproduce the qn here?

Ok, I've managed to scan the question from the book. Here it is.

        http://i46.tinypic.com/34yuq2s.jpg\">
On the next page, it says \"How many other ways can she arrange the cards?\" Draw all possible answers in the space below.\"

Finally, the last part has a question, She can arrange the cards in ____ other ways.

        Thanks!

i would think of the following ways :

          2 groups of 6 (given)
          6 groups of 2
          3 groups of 4
          4 groups of 3

there should be 3 other ways.

Thanks for reproducing the qn. Reading the qn I do not think should include 1 group of 12 becos of it’s stated "equal groups".

This is not a maths question. It’s a question on statutory interpretation. I seriously doubt that the person who set the question even thought about how the words he/she chose could be interpreted in different ways. The question merely asks "How many other ways can she arrange the cards." In the context of a maths question about factors, the plural includes the singular. As a maths question, it fails to achieve its objective if it omits 1x12. Worse, it could be positively misleading on the correct mathematical concept.

I hate this kind of problems because sometimes the child can be penalised, not because the child is wrong, but because the teacher/examiner is wrong.

A good maths question should be clear and unambiguous. If adults can argue about the interpretation of a question, what does one expect a child to do with it?

To take the ambiguity out of the question, the person who wrote the question should have included one group of 12 as an additional example. In its current format, I would say that both answers are correct.
