I can’t watch the youtube video. His visual stiming involved him walking along and staring at straight lines. Sometimes, he will use his eyes to trace lines. For normal people like us, we will wonder what’s this boy looking at and only he finds the lines interesting. This habit of him comes one and off, there was a period for almost 2 mths, that he did not do it at all and we thought he has grown out of it, but it came back again.

As for his improvement, I am most thankful that he has found his voice, he can finally use his voice to tell us things that he wants. I read that a high percentage of ASD persons do not speak and will never speak.

For a long time, I thought he will will be one of them because he really had a hard time trying to say his first word, u can see his mouth trying to make a sound but it seems that there is an invisible devil using his demonic hand to cover his mouth, refusing to let him speak. That was very painful to watch. For eg, we tried to get him to say ‘milk’ before we give it to him, he can’t say it, all he can do is to make a "m" sound. At that moment, I feel so sorry for him, so poor thing, he is not mute but yet the Autism devil refuses to let him speak.

For your boy’s insurance, maybe you don’t do any thing now, don’t say anything to your agent. When your boy is 5, you can send him for re-assessment. Judging by what you have described of your son, you may get a pleasant surprise. If he continues to display social skills and play appropriately with his friends, there is a good chance that he is just a slightly delayed case and not ASD.

From the list, my son has

            1) doesn't know how to make friends (but fully aware of his surroundings)
            2) Don't share interest/achievements with others
            3) Spoken language difficulty
            4) Lots of grammar errors when speaking but can write proper English on paper :?
            5) Avoids eye contact
            6) doesn't pick up people's emotions ( though if you ask him he can tell you the emotions of a person)

He has no issues with the rest, didn't spin things or have tantrums or have obsessive behaviors when he's younger or even now. He's symptoms are very subtle, perhaps that's why my hub thinks nothing of his condition? That's why I never thought he had. That's why I am still wondering maybe he has other disorder but not autisim? Yet, at his social class, I saw a group of kids who seem perfectly normal to me. That's why I'm half telling myself he has autism. I will not know till the proper diagnosis.

              Double E:
There's one thing that I am puzzled about my boy's behaviour. When he wants to get out attention, he will call us or tap our hand or shoulder, which is the correct way to do it. But when he wants to go near his sister or try to communicate with her, he will use his finger to poke her face or eyes, making her cry and mad. Why can't he use the same method that he used on us when trying to communicate with his sister? Do any of your kids display such inconsistency?

I find my son is inconsistent at home, at school and at his social class. But I also don't know why. At home hes chatty, eye contact, joint attention and all but don't display all these at social class & at school. At school he is very well behaved, no jumping, pays attention in class and retains whatever was taught. But in social class, he's more fidgety, jumps awkwardly when excited and can't remember the story told in class. :? I also don't know why.

Mashy, are you a Christian? Since you (it was you right?) who quoted the bible? Can I ask if you feel angry at God for your son’s condition?

Blokus, I am not a christian but a budhhist. I was angry with my God why she made my son autistic and is this what I deserve after all the good things I have done?

For a long time, almost 19 years, I have been taking good care and counseling this girl whom my mum used to baby sit. She comes from a broken family and she has no other adult to turn to except my family.

I took care of her when she was at her most vulnerable period, I paid for her mthly expenses including school registration fee, act as a guardian to meet her teachers and social worker in school when she gets into trouble. 2 weeks after I gave birth to my second child, I had to rush to her school to meet her teacher with swollen and full breasts (cos can’t pump my milk out in time). I treat her like my own daughter. When I found out my son was autistic, I was angry, why God chose my son to be in the spectrum after I have done so much for someone who is not my own flesh and blood, shouldn’t good fortune befall on my kids?

After a while when I am more calm about my boy’s condition, I see things from another perspective. Perhaps God is moved by what I have done for this girl and that she knows that I am able to cope and love my child no matter what becomes of him, that’s why God chose me to be my boy’s mother. My husband said to me once, that my boy is lucky that he has us as his parents who love him and can afford to send him for therapy. If he is to be born into another family (a poorer family or a dysfunctional family), he would not have improved so much or he could end up being abandoned.

So there, while I still grieve from time to time, I tell myself that I am a special mother who is given a special task to love a special kid. Not everyone has this privilege.

Double E, exactly how I feel. For me, I thought I gave my complete trust in God to take care of my fetus while pregnant; prayed etc. But still, turned out like that. Feel like my trust is betrayed, to the point of questioning my own religion.

Yes I'm a Christian. I wouldn't say I'm angry with God about his condition. I remember feeling very overwhelmed after his operation. It was supposed to be a simple hydrocele surgery and it turned out more than that. I just couldn't contain it anymore then and broke down. I felt so sad that my boy had to go through so much ordeal. When he was young, he was very sickly. Then his growth issues plus autism and then the botched surgery which we found out another chronic condition which we couldn't do anything about. And this condition may possibly affect him in future.

I did question why did he allow this to happen to a little boy. Felt devastated that my son had to go through so much in just 6 years of his life. Other pp would not have gone through as much in their entire lifetime. I can only say he's a special boy and we have been chosen as his parents. We will just take a step at a time and see where we will go. Actually even talking about it now makes me tear. I think if each condition is in isolation, I won't feel so bad. Like if he just had autism or he only had growth issues or whatever. When all combined, it is like an overwhelmingly huge rock weighing on me. I hope God will remove some of it and provide healing. My boy's autism symptoms seems milder now. So maybe He is healing him from it now. I hope someday, he will indeed be healed of all these illnesses.
