Just my two cents worth of thought on HCL:-

      1. HCL testing format is different from CL. No oral, one compo, 40% and main paper 60%

      2. The HCL’s tests student’s ability to differentiate 多音字和像形字;that requires student to have wider vocab and deeper understanding.

      3. The comprehension in HCL is much harder comparing to CL. The lift-up from passage is discouraged, instead, the student is encouraged to use own language. There are normally have two 你认为,如果你是… such questions.

Having said above difference, learning of HCL will definitely boost the learning of CL. If a child is okay with normal Chinese, learning HCL will expose him/her more usage of language, which I always feel our children are lack of.

The only thing, to prepare HCL and CL for PSLE, a child has to be taught using different answering methods. The whole emphasis are totally different. That is why a child may get A* for CL, not not easy to get distinction for HCL.

In P5, if your child is offered to take up HCL, I would suggest you to take up, you can always decide later whether or not take HCL for PSLE. But you certainly will learn more in HCL than in CL.

            :grphug: Club 2002! Happy Holidays! 🕺 🕺

Some of us might have finished with the P4 SA2 exams and so this long weekend will be a \"free & easY\" one! :imcool:

My P4 DD1 stii has one more paper - Science on coming Monday so this weekend, she still has to brush up some weaker areas and revise the notes one more round. Thankfully, there is this long weekend :please:

I have been reading previous posts and am so thankful for many parents here to share about opting for P5 HMT next year. I have not received any notification letter about it and thus do not know whether DD1 will be offered this additional subject.

Question on higher chinese. Understand that most non-SAP schools allow kids to take higher chinese in P5 and P6. What are the pros and cons on taking up an additional subject? Would appreciate your views as I have only one day to come to a decision.. 😓

Yes, HMT adds 1-pass, 2-merit or 3-distinction points to T-score if you plan to apply to SAP schools.

Thanks 711mum. That's the information I was looking for.

Athough we are unlikely to go for a SAP secondary school, DD1 decided to take up Higher Chinese in P5. Reasons being that she genuinely likes Chinese and has a natural flair for it. Although we speak mainly English at home, she constantly does well in the subject wihout spending much time on revision. In addition, her school has also recommended her to take it up as she is coping well in the 4 main subjects. I do not foresee having to put in much addiional effort other than having to stay back another day in school each week. :xedfingers:

Trina, how did your dd do it? To be good in chinese while being in english speaking family. Did she read a lot?

Wrt hcl, what is the criteria if one wants to take in secondary school? I vague recall only top ten percent or if 11-30percent, one must get at least merit in hcl psle to qualify for hcl in secondary school. If so,tthose who think they may want to take hcl in secondary school but not confident to be in top ten percent, should consider trying to aim for merit during psle hcl regardless if want to go sap school, right ?

Jedamum, I give credit to Berries Learning Centre and her teachers who ignited her interest for Chinese. Before joining at K1 she dislikes the subject very much. She has been in their higher Chinese class since P1 and we rely heavily on the 2h weekly lessons to prepare her for exams. We don’t do much at home. Sometimes we read a bit of Chinese book or the Chinese newspaper she gets from school. I guess the main exposure at home is watching Korean shows or hong kong serials dubbed in Chinese. LOL

                      Trina,

Yes, I think watching drama does -help greatly. My boy was with berries for four years too- but never picked up the proficiency in the language due to little daily exposure. Not many chinesep drama appeal to him. We tried journey to the west, but the language used were those olden poetic type. Media corpdrama standard not bad, but some time kindof PG stuff keep popping out. I think I gonna get hk drama dvd for this holidays. …my boy quite keen on the forensic series, rerun on media corp not long ago.

No problem Trina 😉 it is your blessing that your DD is breezing through all subjects especially CL, makes decision making a lot easier. Anyway, we have one more subject to go so will only get to know if DD will be offered HCL next week.
