My DS just got his SA2 English paper 2 results… 45 out of 95. Havent seen the paper yet but still very worrying. How do i help him to improve for PSLE? Dun understand how he can do so badly for English and scored 80 for Chinese… We converse mainly in English at home.

Hi, you probably need to find out whether the paper2 is a tough paper the school set by finding out his class ave or cohort ave. besides, did he do well in his ca1/2 n sa1? Eng paper2 is tough to score, vocab cloze requires the child to have a vast vocab list for anything under the sun n some passages in comprehension passages are just not easy .. ...
As long as the child do well in his past exams n his compo, oral n listening is ok then probably he is ok ... Suggest you get him to read more n practice more during the coming holiday.

This is a common dilemma for a lot of students. How does a student who converses well at home and in social situations score badly for the actual paper. There can be many reasons for this and each student usually presents a unique set of reasons.
In my experience, the child is either not very good with exam skills. He/She might be careless or prone to 'tricks' in the question. The trick to solving this problem is to give the child skills and tools to approaching questions.
Some kids also loose a lot of marks because of grammar mistakes and/or a lack of good vocabulary in their composition.
You can pm me a copy of your child's exam paper and I can take a look and recommend how you can guide your kid to a better grade.
I also post free worksheets and tips on this site. Go ahead and make full use of it.

How abt teach both - in case model method can't work, got algebra to fall back on?
All PSLE questions could be solved using Model Method. That is why Algebra was only very basic for P6 studens. In fact, some schools might not teach them at all until the second half of the year.
I don't encourage you to teach him algebra method, as he will have not be able to 'connect' and participate in class discussion.
I am a Maths Olympiad trainer and full-time tutor, so I make sure when I discuss with Primary school student, I will use only Model method.
To me, it is important to use the same language/method that the school used, so that the student can master the concept. -

Thanks for your tips... my DS just informed me that his overall SA2 score is 60%... Have not seen the papers yet but i understand that he scored 80% for his situational writing. I guess he must have done quite well for his oral and listening comprehension as well. I think you are right, he is careless and his vocabulary is limited and thus unable to perform for his paper 2. Well, i will need to work on the techniques and vocabulary during this school holiday. But i really have no idea how to work on his carelessness... -

English - more practice and possible need a tutor to coach on the various English techniques - revisiting the fundamentals. I found this book - Longman Mastering English Grammer & Vocab really useful. U may want to try it..
My DD also doing PSLE next year. Glad to know many other parents are also on the same boat :grphug:
There's still time so let's keep at it! Yes agree this holiday start the practice. -

Hi! I think you'll have to buy the past year psle assessment books from popular. There are 2 or 3 authorised publishers. But do note that only a sample of a few questions from each year is published, unlike o and a level ten yr series. so we will not be able to get a feel of the level of difficulty for a whole paper.Hi all,
I like to check if there is a link to MOE past year PSLE exam paper for references?
Thanks -
