GEP Chinese is exactly the same as mainstream Chinese. But school will set more difficult questions for them to answer. If they never read newspaper or story books, they will struggle when come to test or exam.

Oops ! Mine never read although the school gets them to buy. Ended up, I'm the one reading it πŸ˜‰

My suggestion is spend at least 15 min a day reading newspaper headline with them. Gradually kids will enjoy Chinese instead of hate Chinese.
I use this method during the class, good respond, at the end result follow.Everybody happy.

Another good way to learn Chinese is to get them watch Chinese Drama Serials, these programmes are where they learned a lot about idioms and phrases about daily life experiences. πŸ˜‰

Actually, there is no fixed & fast rule about which Chinese Drama Series to watch, it can be drama series, daily TV chinese news reports or even a chinese movie, as long as the kids like to watch, let them because once they get 'hook' on the show, especially drama series, they will 'auto force' themselves to learn & understand the language if they want to enjoy the show. My kids even pick up the chinese idiom \"η³Ÿη³ δΉ‹ε¦»β€œ from one of the drama series recently. Not frequently used, but at least now they know what it means. πŸ˜‰

Hi, wld like to know where normally GEP students go for tuitions? Centres or private ? Which subject? DO these centres really help?

                Please gives some feedback :please:
I thought GEP kids require no tuition. Anyway, Mindstrectcher has some courses for GEP although I am not sure whether they are good or not.

My son went into GEP and so I am very curious about this and especially curious when my son told me most of his classmates are at tuition schools.

I visited a few centers and looked at the material they reckon are for GEP but they dont have enough depth.

I visited a gifted school yesterday and have not attain the quality of the class and material.

I am trained in Gifted Ed and I think most GT kids needs more life coaching rather than work coaching. Motivation and staying at tasks and keeping their interest is the main thing as they are usually more intense or more eager to fully absorb themselves in things they value.

I work through the HW from school and comparing with GT school in OZ, the GEP stuff is not that challenging if the kids are guided to perform the tasks.

As GT kids pick up quickly, I suggest enriching them on regular days to keep them interested in learning. Negotiate a learning schedule towards test dates for drills to ensure they dont make mistakes. I believe tuition / coaching is necessary if the schools / tutor is able to meet their learning needs else it will be another expensive boring experience to hinder their learning process. I was very lucky to encounter such a school in Oz and my son is so keen that he is always 30 mins early to get to the tuition center and bursting with excitment when i picked him up. Not easy for him as the class goes for more than 8 hours on Sat but he totally loved it. Maybe I do the something similar. good luck. some people thinks learning lab is a better choice but personally i think it is overpriced and the teachers are not necessary understanding GT as it is getting commercialised.
