GEP - General Syllabus Discussion

Agree totally, less chance to participate in various competitions as now most are small fishes in big pond and both parents & kids have to manage their own expectations. No longer easy to get 90+ when they used to get in mainstream.
I would say that the projects are quite manageable at least for the P4 this year. All the homework in GEP are worksheets based. Students are expected to do proper filing. If yr child is an independent learner, able to understand fr teachers' teaching, hates drills and practice, then I would say that yr kid shld enjoy the GE curriculum. Those who are really good in Maths will enjoy the program too. Those who enjoy writing and debating would enjoy the english lessons.kikoyo:
Hi, I understand that there are many project assignment in GEP and students are expected to pick up the mainstream syllabus independently and quickly. It seems like GEP requires the students to be highly independent and able to self-discipline. So if one is very playful and not able to manage his time well, is GEP still a viable path? Hope to hear some advice from the experienced parents.
Thanks...
However, sad to say, usually only the good ones would be selected for competitions. Hence, I would say some of the average or below average students may just go through the GE program without the opportunity to take part in any competitions. This maybe demoralising to some kids. However, this also really depends on the HOD/teachers of the respective schools. Some believe in giving every pupil at least one chance of participating in the competitions. These are the great teachers. Education is not about bringing glory to the school only.
As for the friends, there is no worry at all. They will make many good friends. Since the class size is small, they get to know everyone.
As a parent, you sometimes have to bear with the frustrations of not knowing what is going on in the class. You simply have to trust your child and the teachers. There are also no assessment books or past year GEP papers for you to buy and practise. So the kids should be happy.
Just to share. :congrats: to those who are selected for the GEP this year.

Clueless as I am when I started this thread. In fact, many of us here are 1st timer parents with kids on board to GEP. Now, many of us here have made friends and getting to know one another as well. :snuggles:
Thanks for startting this thread. Yeah, we have been promoted.GiftedGem:
For parents of P4 currently, glad that our children have made it that far for this whole year and we still have to embrace another 2 more years to go.....
Let's lean on one another with support and encouragement to drive our children to greater heights !
Our kids will be P5 next year.
Btw, ds did not do well in this exam. He did better in CA1 and CA2.
But then hor this exam - 50%
Btw, 35% in CA1 contributes a large % too. Hope that helps for yr DS. -

Any parents with children in NH GEP? I stay in west and NH seems to be a good choice as far as distance is concerned. Keen to find out more from the experienced parents..
Congrats! In some degree, the choice of Sch does matter. ACS is a good one as the boys are strong in Eng . U may want to consider the distance though since u are putting up in the west. Bt Timah area is traffic congested cos the arrays of reputable schools are near to one another. NH has a pool of gifted talents scoring Maths and Sci well.Lock:
Hi, My DS just got offered a place in GEP. We are now quite undecided mainly cos DS does not show a cut above the rest among those who are selected for GEP in his class. We are not sure if he really has what it takes to do GEP. Would like to hear from the experienced parents here.
Then, there's selection of school. Among all the 9 schs, I like ACS but I stay in the west. Does the choice of sch matter? What to look out for when choosing the sch.
TIA
Thanks.... -

Thanks much for advice. As my DS2 and I didn't expect at all that he will be selected, his first reaction is he prefers to stay in the current school. As I hv heard cases where child can't cope and switch back to mainstream in a different school due to face issue, I am concerned if my DS will end up the same case. I m going around & seeking advice...
Yes. Time management is an important element. Many a times, we have to remind the dateline submission. After all, they are still 10 yrs old kids. Personally, it takes both parent and child to clap. It is a growing process and u will notice the difference in yr child after a yr in GEP. DD looks at things fr different perspective now.kikoyo:

From what I hear, parents & children need to work together to manage the time still but it is achievable. Think there is still a big part in the child to have the consciousness in managing his own studies. Correct? -

[/quote]Pigylalala, dagong99: thanks so much for sharing. Some of the things u mentioned seem relevant to my DS characteristic: good in Maths, love to debate, hate drills & practices. In yr opinion, Will it cause self-esteem issue if the average or lower didn't get the opportunity in taking part in the competitions? Any idea if NH is 1 with teachers believing in students equal opportunity to hv the exposures?

Received the ISO option form on Friday, need to choose between IVP or IRS or FPS & submit option by next Tuesday. If we choose IVP for example, what happen if the idea is not accepted ? DS2 wants to do IVP but it seems to be the more difficult choice among the three. Has Anyone made their choice ?

so he dun really care if he can go or not, he just wants to enjoy his life
there. However, he did tell me in the event if he can't make it in GEP, he won't want to go back to his former school although he likes it a lot. When I asked him why, he said ε δΈΊζζ»η±ι’εγ  -

Hi all,
DS was offered a place in GEP and I am interested to find out more about the program in Henry Park and Nanhua. Would be grateful if you could share your experiences in either of these schools. Are the teachers dedicated, what are their strengths and will the children be given lots of homework? -

Choosing IRS as 1st choice as I think it is a good exposure to collect data and do fact findings. DD is keen in IVP but hearing fr the P5 Geppers, this is only offered to a small percentage as they have earlier opted for IVP or FPSP as 1st choice but ended in IRS.
