Some learning difficulties affect the student’s ability to focus long enough to absorb the new information (ADD). Some learning difficulties affect the student’s speed at processing new information and reacting to it (SPD). Some learning difficulties affect the student’s ability to sit still in a traditional classroom (ADHD). Some learning difficulties affect the student’s ability to write (dysgraphia) or do math (dyscalculia). Some learning difficulties affect the student’s ability to use language (dyslexia or foreign language students). Some learning difficulties are a lack of one of the senses (blindness, deafness).
Many times the learning difficulties are considered "learning differences" as any of the students with the issues listed above can also be very, very bright – that is, they have a high IQ, an ability to learn, but have a difficulty in learning at the same speed and in the same way as what is considered a "normal" student. Oftentimes, these students learn better kinesthetically (hands-on work) or visually rather than from books or lectures. -

Hi,
My daughter seems to have issues with her studies. She's easily distracted, takes a long time to finish her homework, but it's her attitude behind it that worries me. When she faces a difficult problem, she simply gives up, not wanting to try; she has no sense of competitiveness. This leads to not finishing her homework, which she hides from both us and the teacher and lies to us. The teacher can't help her if she hides her work away or don't complete her work. It has come to a point where the teacher would personally check her bag. Both teacher and us have given her pep talks, explain the situation to her, etc. She is aware of her problems but the next day or so, she behaves as if nothing had happened and she is in her happy self again.
She not a willful, badly behaved child, she's very thoughtful towards her other siblings, has no temper, etc. Her teacher at school actually likes her very much because she's helpful in class, shares things and quite happy-go-lucky. However, this poor work attitude is bringing her down. We've been working together with her teachers and she has improved but she'd relapse to her old ways.
Could anyone recommend me a child psychologist/psychiatrist so that I can better understand her and know how to manage her issues? Thanks.
Edited to add: she's in P2. She failed her maths because of careless mistakes and she suddenly decided not to do bar modelling even though she had used them in all the assessments we've given her.

Maybe you could start with Counselling. I believe schools should have Counsellors, or if you prefer to take her outside, you can try those family services centres. I was told that the private practice counsellors charges 10% of their private fees when they take cases at those centres.

Both hubby and I have had a discussion with her teachers already. She blames her distractions on external parties (siblings, etc) but from what I’ve observed, she distracts herself (takes an hour to bathe, change; drink, snack between studies; has a ball of blu tac that she presses whilst working, etc). Her siblings only get home at 6pm and she’s alone the whole afternoon. Even her teachers notice her always fiddling with her erasers, etc, when at school.
Could you name some of these family service centres, straffan? Thanks. -
Go look for a psychologist to get an overall test, better safe than sorry.

I came across this post and wanted to share. I have a friend who’s son is ADHD. They are in the Klang Valley, and actually found a therapy program, where someone comes to their home to work on speech/communication. Their son is still in the program and doing much better.
