The Ministry of Education (MOE) will no longer name the top-scorers in national examinations when it releases the results.
In response to queries from The Straits Times, an MOE spokesman said on Tuesday that it wanted to "balance the over-emphasis on academic results".
The Ministry wants to "help parents and students understand that academic performance is just one aspect of a student’s overall development and progress".
The Straits Times had reported on Tuesday that the MOE was considering not naming the pupils with the highest scores in the Primary School Leaving Examination. This comes in the light of the ongoing debate on the PSLE, where the exam has been criticised as being too high-stakes.
The Ministry spokesman said on Tuesday that students who do well academically will still be recognised through the Edusave Awards and scholarships. Schools can also celebrate their students’ achievements to recognise their efforts. -

More sec schools are introducing the IP or IB programmes because they are getting popular here, and one selling point being students taking these programmes get to skip the 'O' level exams, although many IP students will still be required to complete the 'O' level exam for MT. The same goes with NUSH (Diploma) where students go into Uni after 6 years. Most schools offering these programmes are those with a certain level of reputation for producing good 'A' level result students. To many, the crux of the matter is that the GCE 'O' level certificate is losing its significance, thus the choice for the IP/IB route.Supposing last year's COP is 235 for eg, what is a 'safe' COP that my child can get into the school? All kids are using last year COP as reference. So how would parents know whether their kids stand a chance?
I'm glad nani asked this, bcos this question is also weighing heavily in my mind.
Why is it that so many schools are introducing IP? Does it affect intake for our kids?
T score depends on several factors...from the looks of it, these factors are not known to us right?
T-score is computed using the mean score and standard deviation for the national cohort, and the true score a student achieved for each subject. True scores of students will not be made known to the public, and the reason is probably because MOE wants to avoid appeals and challenges which will be humongous that MOE cannot realistically deal with.
With more sec schools offering the above-mentioned programmes, students going to these schools via DSA will naturally be more. And this could mean less students (dragon year kids aside) competing for sec schools through the S1 posting. Because of the increase in DSA intake, the COP as such will probably drop as well this year, granted that students' T-Score varies from year to year. Therefore, if your DC has the ability to match the last COP of the sec schools of choice, just go for it. -

Because this is a democracy and we have the right to choose where we would prefer our kids to be sent to, and not have it determined for us by some agency or computer. -

As I will be overseas with my DH, My DD will be reporting to the sch herself.
I am wondering if anyone here knows what entails during the reporting ? Does she just hav to report ,register,collect booklist … thats all ? or will there be talks,programmes,and other decisions to be made ?
