I'm not sure. In my humble opinion, it is an over-reaction to all the negativity about the stress level of PSLE. Obfuscation of results doesn't make the stress go away.

If anything, I think it is unjust for the top PSLE scholars this year. They have worked hard for their good results, and they deserve the honors of being officially announced as the top scholars in Singapore. Academic prowess is nothing to be ashamed of!

If no one sets the bar for others to follow, then everyone will end up being contented with mediocre levels. In the long term, we will end up with a sub-standard education system just because we are afraid of people complaining about failing to make the grade. Look at the UK's ensuing debate about the low national GCSE standards versus the more rigorous GCE 'O' Levels taken by international students - how it is blamed for the poorer performance of UK secondary school students versus equivalent students in other countries in international competitions.

PSLE is just a ruler that we use to measure students for their fit to go to various schools. If we are taller, we have to wear longer pants. If we are short and we want to wear longer pants, we have to put in the effort to eat and exercise more so that we can (hopefully) grow taller. Or we simply wear the pants that we are most comfortable with, because we have the highest chance of overall success if we use the tools that suit us best.

If we can understand this fundamental principle, there would be much less complaints about how tall the PSLE ruler is set at. The stress stems from parents' fear of their children not \"meeting the cut\" and ending up in a \"2nd rate\" secondary school. If anything, MOE should look more into convincing parents about the merits of these \"2nd rate\" secondary schools to put them at ease that the schools are really the best fit for their children. That would be addressing the stress directly, instead of simply sweeping PSLE results under the carpet.

Naming top students is ok with me...though my son is not a high achiever, it doesn't mean I will be jealous. Every kid is different...some are really intelligent.


I have heard of a mother who only see RI as THE school for her son...yet the boy has not even sat for PSLE :faint:

When one does not compare one's fruit to others, there shall be no stress. Peace.

I am one who subscribe to the philosophy that education is about learning and growing as a person, it is not about competition, at least not at children and teen level. For this I feel if MOE is serious about reducing stress by not announcing top students, I think all the more important this should be done at the class level. No need to reveal who are the top 3 in class every year. Then the kids can just study thru, for the sake of learning and enjoyment of the Subjects and not to stress themselves out to outdo others. However, I think for PSLE, I still feel it is good to give recognition to the top 3 but forget about listing top 10or 20.

Till now I still don't see the connection how kids can get stress from knowing who the top students are. If I am a 230, it does not affect me some smart kid out there get 280 or 290. I will probably compare with my peers in class. As much as MOE is emphasizing character buildin, isn't is important that kids learn the reality of win and lose in the world. They can learn how to be happy for those who do well, how to accept losing and be resilient and try again.

I am neither for nor against this new decision from MOE but I still can't understand how this reduce stress. This is just a knee jerk reaction, just like the Good Character award.

What ever will be will be! Give unconditional love and support to your DC. Accept that every child is different , each child has different potential…the kids had tried their best.

whatever the outcome, have some private time to share the joys or tears with him/her. This is the time that your DC need your unconditional support and love…

If your child do well, celebrate with him/her.

If your child did not do well, share his/her pain. Do not add to it. Help your child plan his/her next steps. Let your child know you still love him/her as much as you ever did.
