I have also no idea how they allocate the class.

BTW, gayjoan, from your hooray about class 1J, does it mean it is a special class? If you are aware of how they allocate the class, please enlighten us here who are blur blur…

Wow, they got at least 10 classes in P1?
Is 1J the best class? I heard that North Vista class A is the last class..

I read with interest the comments posted here. I don't think the issue is on whether banding/streaming is useful or not. As rightly pointed out by most, there are clearly pros and cons. The issue here is really on fairness. Why did the school only choose to band the top 62 students while leaving the 63rd student onwards to be randomy mixed? A test based on 2 subjects conducted at this stage of the game is controversial because its accuracy can be questionable, Some raised the point that why brighter students should slow down and wait for the slower ones?? But why is there a concern since these students are already 'bright'? Even at a slower pace, they will still be ahead since they are brighter right?? And also since there are no exams till Pri 3, why should it concern the brighter students if the pace is not as fast as they can cope? They have 2 years before any form of serious exam is conducted. Once again, the issue is really on fairness. I agree that life is not always fair but if there is something we can do to correct it, then why shouldn't we? If the school has no intention of placing their better teachers or allocating more resources to these top 2 classes, then why the \"accelerated program\"? It is naive to think that there will be no difference to the program otherwise why even bother to go through the trouble of banding in the first place? If banding is seen to be the way to go, then why not band the entire cohort from 1st to last?? Then the brighter ones will hang out with the brighter ones and the slower ones with the slower ones. It is such an elitist concept, I am sure most Singaporeans will have no problems understanding. In the first place, not all schools practice this policy. There are schools that place students randomly and some form of banding only done after P2. Is this policy of banding students healthy, fair and in line with the overall intent of the changes made to our education system in recent years?? This is a question not meant for laymen like me and you. Only MOE can address this concern.

Honestly, I don’t know if Class 1J is a better class or not… I just hope my girl will enjoy her learning journey … I certainly think teachers play a very important role in this journey.

Every system has its pros and cons. I understand where both sides are coming from. But I think its good that the school can communicate their practice to parents, at least, we know what they are doing, and how we can work hand in hand with them to nurture our children (i believe schools’ aim is the same like all parents, that is, to bring out the best potential in them) I believe all children are able to excel under the right learning environment and the right learning method that is suitable to their learning style.

Hence, if we know they are in the so-called best class with faster learning pace, we can then think about how to help them to cope and stretch their potential. But, if we know that they are the slower-learners, there is nothing to despair, we can then think about how to help them from our end to pick up the basic and concepts quickly and after that, stretch their potential too. There are many great people who exhibit great learning ability at a young age but there are also many who started off as slow-learners too.

I think its very important the school and the parents have a very good and sincere communication. And as parents, we should provide our children with plenty of support and love and they will excel and be happy in whatever they do.

From my piont of view :-

All childrens born in the year 2003 compulsory have to registered under next year 2010 primary one educations.

There’s sure a lot of gap especially those born in January till December 2003 , right? Especially those born in January 2003 going to be 1 years old in December . But those in December childrens is just considers as new born only.So much differences, right?

Those born in Mid 2003 year. There will be a gap between their learning already.

Not to says childrens born in December 2003, 11 months differences
if to compare childrens born in January 2003. Their progressing of learning will be so so much different.

I’m I right to says this?

Maybe everyone will aims to gives birth on every year in January instead. Ya , must put into considerations …Ha… All Hospitals will thus have insufficent Beds for all new born babies then…

I agreed that being born as yr end BB is unfair to the child. I also tried to aim for Jan/Feb BB when i give birth to my son on 18Dec06, but i tried for nearly a yr and still no news. When i nearly give up, I was pregnant. Thats how my yr end BB comes about. He's doing quite well now. 🙂
