Really impossible to direct hire Indonesian maid?

Can also please clarify, was she a new maid , or was she returning from home leave?

If you mean the KTKLN requirement as being the new scheme, then yes, she had apply for the KTKLN herself from one of the agents on the embassy list before she left Indonesia. She had worked in Singapore before under a different employer previously then returned home. So I hired her directly as her new employer, neither of us had to incur high agency's charges and she got her full salary from the 1st month.

For maids on home leave, do check with embassy. I believe they apply for it here but must go back and collect the KTKLN before they return to Singapore.

My maid was not a home leave situation so I wouldn't know for sure. For those thinking of a direct hire, please go to the Indon Embassy and make your queries there as each case may have slightly different circumstances and policies can change. On the MOM side, the instructions on their website are pretty straightforward. Just remember to arrange for the security bond before her arrival and ensure the info is sent to MOM as I outlined earlier.

The reason why maid agencies charge so much is so you don't have to figure all this out yourself. It is possible to do but you need to put the time and effort into it and be prepared to go through some anxiety wondering if you have done everything right. If you missed something along the way, the maid may not be allowed to enter Singapore and put on the first flight back and then you still have to figure out how to get her to Singapore again. :?

I’m asking how your new maid managed to apply for her KTKLN card without the usual documents eg work permit, contract, ticket. Are these documents not necessary in the case of a new maid?

We weren't asked for one, but you never know - different offices/agents might ask for different things. :roll: You could always sign a contract and send it to her for her signature, just to be safe.

I would say it is possible to direct hire but the experience is fraught with some degree of anxiety and uncertainty, even after all the time and effort spent reading the official websites, following the instructions carefully and going to the embassy in person.


If anyone knows roughly how much maid agencies charge for doing the paperwork for such direct hires, please post here. After all, they do not need to shortlist and train the maid, only do the paperwork.

Many mths back, I was checking with this agency on the cost to bring my ex Indonesia maid back. She said she will only charge me agency fee which is about $680. The agent will charge the maid 2 mths of salary. The maid must have the KTKLN card & passport ready. Or else they also could not do the direct hire for me.
