$$ well spent for attending preschool

Yes agreed, it's possible.cherrygal:
It's not easy handling the kid 24 hours a day (coz you are mom AND teacher) and have to engage the kid meaningfully. That's why most kids who stay at home tend to watch lots of TV or spend hours on the iPad. I would rather they do something constructive at the preschool.
Not unless the home environment can cater for the child to work with meaningful stuff.
It can still be constructive... in fact at times more constructive than being stuck in a centre with a teacher who doesn't teach, doesn't teach very well or worse can't teach.
The home can be surrounded by variety of resources/materials so children can have access to different types of play and work.
I shared a couple of stuff in these threads.

But Buds, you are a trained Montessori teacher rite? That's why you know these stuff... for some of us mere mortals, it's tough being mom, work and still have to teach. :udawoman: -
Babe, these days where resources are amply and easily available over the internet and even public libraries...... any parent can self-teach themselves anything, right? Plus the information and the resources (even the photocopiable worksheets) are FREE!

I'm most times more a mom than anything else. No time to be kitten oso like the one on the left. :rotflmao:
I used to work too. Full time, part-time, flexi hours, freelance, work from home... you name it. Can la.. as long as u put your mind to it. Stay positive. -
It's not the lack of materials lah, but rather we lack your passion and patience...
After a long day, no energy to wash my cosmetics off let alone sit down and drill the kids...
-
Uhmmm.. can't help you guys there.

But like I mentioned earlier... I used to work too. Full time, part-time, flexi hours, freelance, work from home... you name it. Can la.. as long as u put your mind to it. Stay positive.
But then again, I can understand that different professions require different working hours hence it's understandable that not all parents may have the luxury of time. :hugs: -
hehehe, think JazN mommy will benefit from your sharing.

Social skills also depend very much on character. My kid still not willing to share toys despite being in a preschool for a year plus. Might also get some bad habits from classmates, as well as learn some good ones like washing hands before food...
there are more things learnt which cannot be measure in terms of number of vocabs / able to do how many math sumsJazN:
Thks for the input! Was thinking for the amount paid for preschool whether my child is learning anything & progressing. Nope not a teacher, just a mum & @ least coaching her a bit I noe she's learning something
Sigh
social skills are not quantifiable, eg willing to share a toy, empathy, manners, etc
Learning about spelling and other academic skills is taught outside school for my kid, as I do not feel there is much progress after placing in the preschool. -
jazN,
May I know how old is your child? -

Hi Janz,dear mummies & daddies,
how do u gauge if the $$ spent on preschool is worthwhile for your child?
My child is attending a full day preschool and I am starting to wonder if the $$$ spent equates to my child learning more things than at home, beside myself not being an art person.
Her preschool is teaching letterland reciting some alphabets like a=apple for eg either is forgotten or know but don't want to say out.
I know my child remembers if i self taught basic spelling and eg e=egg.
Will appreciate any parents'\"input
Thks lots!!!
My boy is 3 and attending full day child care. He doesn't seem to learn alot on the surface and will be singing lots of songs and dramatic play when he comes home from school. However, I do send him to enrichment classes and go through with him on daily basis.
Teaching your child at home is good if you know how to teach and have many materials to work with.
However, I still feel that children need to interact with other kids and adults so that they will not be so shy. -
Yes very informative comments indeed.
My kid is 3, next jun will be 4yo.
I come across threads some mums taught their kids phonics & some could already read simple sentences. wow.
My kid’s school is using letterland & b4 attending preschool she already noe a-z, just not what they represent. Off school time I just ask a is for…she din really mention what it represent. Teachers taught them to write into the air how to write e.g. a but I don tink they actually will remember the writing strokes.
Social skills wise of cos I’'ve seen improvement as well some habits learnt from there. @home my kid ‘role-play’ out how the teacher(s) tell off? Or ‘scold’ her friends? maybe her too?..hmmm…if she uses a loud voice perhaps following the teacher(s)? Will tell her not to raise her voice cos…
I don’t pressure my kid, not attending any enrichment cos I feel she should be enjoying herself @ this age as next time will have more to study. I let her watch Nick Jr, Disney Jr, boomerang. read &play. Will ‘study’ using a book bought from popular bookstore. -

How much does a 3 hr nursery cost? I put my kid full day class, since half or full also cost almost same.
You could put her in a half-day kindy and keep her at home for the rest of the day (are you a SAHM)? I put my older daughter in a 3-hr nursery when she was 3yo just so she could have time with kids of her own age instead of me and a baby. With both my kids, I generally found that they didn't learn a whole lot in preschool. Most things were learned at home even though I didn't specially teach them or follow a curriculum. They pick up a lot just reading and talking and going out with you.JazN:
