      Times have changed....sigh.

Ya.....everything is not as easy as during our era....
They have more to handle ....
Subjects syllabus and difficulty level, stress level, shortage of sleep hrs, socialisation.....

But as they mature, they adapt very quickly and coping fine.....dont worry too much for them......

I'm at a loss...need to let go bcos he will be in sec 1 and I'm out of touch since last year.

Education Minister, are you aware what's happening on ground level? At primary school, we parents are already out of touch and some require tutors to teach kids Science at P3...something I regretted not doing...but when daughter goes to P3, I am still resisting giving her tuition for science.
      Sorry out of topic.

Current subject of history is so much different from our time ......

History consists of SBQ ( source based questions) and SEQ ( structured essay questions),
Which requires skills of analysing and critical thinking....
such as making inferences from the sources given, evaluation of reliability and usefulness
        and comparing of sources....etc...

While SEQ tests on the ability to formulate valid and strong arguments.....
Pupils must able to think and analyse on the spot and yes,
they need to write real fast within the short period of time.....

Hence, is not so much of memorising.....
        Geog will need more memorising.....
Augmum, you are very in tune. :salute:
After reading this, yes, I also remember my DD telling me no need to memorize History cover to cover like us last time. Exactly what you said above.
I suppose this is what they mean by HOT (higher order thinking) skills. I think another thread has some HOT discussion.
Which I think is useful for future world.
We are old school - now with one click of the mouse data, information is available. How you make of this information is more important.

i couldnt even recognise the photo of the source given, have to ask her \" what is this?? From which era \" ?? :faint:
Frankly, we cant coach them History now ( at least for me).....they know better than us.....lol....

            Definitely!
Janet my personal advice to you is to actually let your son self study and you monitor by the side. You can provide him all the books and material. Let him plan out his schedule. You have a younger one to take care of.

The motivation has to come from him. I have seen parents helping extensively with secondary school projects and assignments. The kids won't learn anything and also won't learn project work dynamics - deadlines, skivers, free loaders, arguments, division of work, harnessing other's abilities etc. worse, they look towards the parents for subsequent projects.

The best is like what majority secondary school parents do - let go.
How long can you hold his hand
I follow you through your PSLE journey and feel that you have been such a great and supportive mum. You can perhaps guide him on how to plan out a study schedule and ensure he follows. What he doesn't understand he has to ask you, your hubby or the future teachers.

Oh yes, perhaps this hoildays can let yr kids practise to write fast and legible…

Very important to be able to write fast…
becos most of the time, even if u have sound knowledge of the answers
but u still need to put them in writing in the shortest period of time, esp for the essay questions…( Hist and Geog)

For IP track, yr 1 will encounter what Augmum discribed. For O level track, I’m not sure if the students will start in yr 1. But eventually will, I can’t remember which yr.

In sec one, is it necessary to take notes during lessons?

Everything seems to be accelerated in schools now… Gulp!
