Actually, P1 chinese is not that frightening lah. Even my KOR's friend's daughter who does not know a single word of chinese when she enters our local school this year can score 91 at end of P1 assessment. The text book is structured in such a way that is simple enough for the 6 / 7 years old to follow. As long as they pay attention in class, I do not think there is a big problem. 😄

My suggestion is you can start preparing your child with fundamentals like teaching the 声母,韵母。Most of the stories I heard were the kids got a bit confused with phonics they learned in English... The first term of P1 Chinese, the kids will be drilled so you need not worry too much. Most of the stuff will be taught from basic.

I agree with Callie that you should start preparing your child during the holiday. Your child will have quite a lot of adjustments to make - new school, new friends, longer school hours, more structured learning etc. If you can help to reduce the stress associated with learning, in my opinion, this will definitely be useful.

While the syllabus at P1 and P2 is not difficult, it is still important to have a good foundation. The pace of learning at the higher levels is much faster and the level of difficulty will increase significantly at each level. There may not be much time for a child to play catching up. Moreover, HYPY is tested at PSLE and this section will be easier to score in. Your time spent on this will not be wasted.
