I have a relative who was also GEP and HCI who scraped through the years and finished A levels with results that could not get him anywhere in the local universities. However he did well for his SAT and managed to get into a good American uni.

Some GEP students, especially boys are usually smart but not the most hardworking. Thus some end up with low scores for PSLE. There is usually about 5-10% GEP students in mainstream secondary schools with school based gifted programme and they mainly score between 240-250 for PSLE.

Some just cannot fit into certain school system. Knew of this kid...probably GEP and HCL...went to HCI (think it was still chinese high before the rebranded). Did ok in Yr1...but HCL went downhill from Yr2...affect his other subjects performance too. Left HCI without a proper cert at Yr4 (?) and went to UK to do high school and uni. Last heard he was doing very well, with scholarship etc and double degree....

So sometimes not doing well academically may be just coz cannot fit into certain culture/system...and they are no less intelligent.

But this kid is lucky to have parents who can afford to send him overseas. Unfortunately for the rest of us who can't afford it, our kids will not have the luxury of a 'backup' system.

But that's a fact of life...
Well, those who is caught in the same situation will have to adopt a roundabout route, I guess, and still get into a local uni.
Anyway, my point is that just coz someone suddenly failed to perform, we should not be too quick to brand them fake GEPpers or IPpers.

Agree though sometimes it's hard to tell whether it's a good fit unless the kid gives it a try. Only on hindsight can we tell for sure. In the meantime, we can only try to do our best to achieve the best fit and hope for the best.
But for the case I mentioned, who wld have thought...Gep n NYPS...HCI wld have seemed a perfect fit.... 🤷
