      fable:

When I travel, I use google maps on my iPhone. You need a wifi connection to download the map for the area you are at, but you are not charged for that blue dot that shows up on the map that tells you where you are. When I was in Europe over summer I didn't get a local sim card and was not charged roaming charges for maps. I didn't know this until I met up with my pilot friend in Paris and he told me that's what he does. Now that wifi is so prevalent, I don't even subscribe to data roaming unless there's a good deal. I think the directions function is charged, but not if you want to see your present location on maps.

Thanks for the tip. Does this still apply with the new iPhone maps?

I'm sure. I haven't upgraded my os coz I didn't want to mess up my maps! Btw I just got back from Sri Lanka and it worked there too!

        Dear all,

Where do you get winter clothings for your children? Is there any sale that you know of? Looking at pants, boots and vest that could keep the children warm.

        Thanks in advance!
Can try Uniqlo, M Dutti. The North Face has nice stuff for kids too. There is a shop in Wheelock Place that sells kids winter clothings ..

THank you AuntieM! We tried Uniqlo, they do not have winter clothings for the kids. 😞 I bought a jacket with doce feathers for them at Zara. Now looking for the pants and boots. Wonder would the thermal wear plus vest and jacket warm enough for the children. I will try North Face this weekend.

            Enjoy your hols! :imcool: 🕺

Personally a good pair of socks and a good jacket is crucial in winter. For socks, I am amazed at the quality of SAF socks. It kept me warm.

Also, take note of the GST implications for overseas purchases. The $600 threshold is per person. While we enjoy the significantly lower price overseas, do be aware of the GST implications.

Declare goods purchased abroad for GST payment: Singapore Customs
            Posted: 21 November 2012 1543 hrs

SINGAPORE: It's the year-end school holidays and Singaporeans travelling overseas are reminded to keep the invoices or receipts of their overseas purchases, so as to facilitate the computation of tax payable.

The Singapore Customs says travellers who return to Singapore carrying goods with values exceeding their Goods and Services Tax (GST) relief and duty-free allowance are required to declare the goods at the Customs Red Channel for the payment of tax.

Travellers can pay their tax or duty at the Singapore Customs Tax Payment Office or at the self-service Tax Payment Kiosk at the checkpoints.

All goods brought into Singapore such as new articles, souvenirs, gifts or food items meant for the traveller's own use or consumption are subject to 7 per cent GST.

Travellers who spend more than 48 hours overseas will get GST relief for goods valued up to S$600.

Those who are away from Singapore for less than 48 hours will get GST relief for goods valued up to S$150.

GST will be levied on the amount exceeding the value of the goods eligible for GST relief.

The GST relief is not applicable for liquor, tobacco products, petroleum and goods imported for commercial purposes.

And there is no duty-free concession on cigarettes and other tobacco products.

All cigarettes, including those with the 'SDPC' (Singapore Duty Paid Cigarette) mark, and tobacco products are subject to duty and GST when brought in by travellers into Singapore.

Singapore Customs says arriving travellers and returning Singaporeans should familiarise themselves with Singapore's customs regulations available at their website.

It adds that it is the responsibility of travellers to make an accurate and complete declaration of the dutiable and taxable items in their possession.

Failure to make a declaration is an offence under the Customs Act and the GST Act.

Offenders may be prosecuted in court and fined up to S$10,000 and jailed for up to three years.

The composition sum for out-of-court settlement for a first-time offender is S$200 per packet for cigarettes, and 10 times the amount of duty or GST for other items.

Try the one at 313 or Parkway parade

There’s a huge travel shop in Changi Airport Terminal 3 level 3 that sells all sorts of stuff useful for travelers. They were having a promotional sale last month, I’m not sure if the sale is still on. They have clothing for cold weather, even anti-theft bags, travel wash, …

We were in Switzerland some days ago. There are shops that sell better quality at affordable prices greater variety of children’s winter wear.

                  The winds were chilling.

North Face is good quality won't wear for adult and kids. But very ex in Singapore. We bought ours from the US which is at least 30% cheaper on regular price.
