Anyone/ whose child's got into TKGS via band dsa? Can you pls share your dsa experience (eg. selection, audition, etc..)...Trying to prepare dd for next year...Looking at the 2012 PSLE results and parents' discussion on schools, it's really freaking me out :nailbite: :yikes:. It's just so worrying....

🙏 :xedfingers: dd can make it to TKGS.

dd is passionate about band and still hoping to do band in sec school. One of the criterias we've set for sec school is band cca must be at least gold (otherwise they will feel worst off as they are in a very good primary school band now). Trying to position her for grade 5 theory next year but practical is not possible. I called the school this year and they said grade 5 is not compulsory (nice to have) as more will depend on her other exposure (SYF, MTDC, etc...) and actual audition.... Omg... this is like stressing me out.... and still must have contingency plans... (if all else fails).... 😓

MMM, band falls under music dsa. It will be good if you can attend their open house to find out more. What I can share is that each year, they have a 10% quota for dsa students. That would worked out range of 24-28 students per yr that they will accept for dsa. Spread across their 12 (estimate) cca, each will be allocated 1-3 slots for dsa. So, it depends on how many students applied for the particular cca. Of course the instruments your dd can play is important factor too. If there are other girls who are playing same instrument with better or worst qualification will affect your dd’s chance. Attending the dsa open house talk will provide you the opportunity to size out the popularity of the cca and ur dd’s chance in comparison to other girls who attend the same dsa briefing. Of course the girl’s performance during audition and interview counts too. During the dsa open house, you will get the opportunity to see the quality of the cca too.

Tkgs is actually a very good school despite the lower cutoff point of 235. For me the only thing to pick about it would be the size of the school it feels very small and cramp when I was in it for the open house ( just a heads up for those with dd or ds taking PSLE the next few years ,the school will be moving to it’s holding site during 2017 I think )

String ensembles selection also depends on your instrumental competency. There will be stringent audition and interview. What string instrument is your dd learning and what level? My DD got in via string.

She's playing the violin and taking grade 1 exam next yr. She will be P2 next yr. May I know is it necessary to boost the chance by taking part in competitions?

Most likely will just go via the PSLE route. But since she's learning violin, I wanted to explore and understand the options. 😄

Any idea where is the holding site or it is too distant? That is like O levels year for my dd1. If she ever gets in.

Sahm, ur dd only p2, long way to go. To be honest, many girls are learning violin and competition may bee keen. To boost your chance, it will be good to take part in competition. My dd completed grade 8 at p5 n pursuing diploma during the DSA exercise. Depending on who else is fighting for the limited slot. The best performer will get it. Also subject to interview and school result. Good luck many years later.

Agree that many are learning violin now and I've heard stories of very accomplished kids too.

I will take one step at a time. It's an option so will see how, at the same time ensuring that she will at least meet the requirement should she wish to try. 😄

I attended the school’s recent Open House. If I hear correctly, service is important to the school. You may wish to volunteer your DD in some community services as well. Alternatively, be involved in leadership roles in school as TKGS emphasized on leadership too.

Kids nowadays are very accomplished in music. The 2 children whom I know were offered CO under Music DSA this year are working on their Diploma at p5 and had been winning international music competitions. One of them would have been offered a scholarship if he had met certain criteria to qualify for it. The kids whom I know with graded exams are not offered anything under the same category. Am guessing that the child will need to win international music competitions and/or participated in public performances to improve the chances.
