I also promised dd1 she is next in line to my iPhone, when I get the pass down windows phone from hubby. After attending the talk, immediately explained to dd1 why we have to retract that promise. It’s not only the games. Even if didn’t subscribe data plan, with free wifi everywhere, it’s hard to monitor internet access.


She is agreeable to our decision, no fuss. I think she knows herself well too, confirmed get addicted & time management is hardly her greatest strength so better don’t create trouble for herself

the reasons why kids want smartphone are

1. peer pressure
2. games

if they can overcome the above then there is no difference even they use a Nokia candy bar phone (which cost less than $100 from 7-11) for just calling purpose and the battery can last at least a few days…

anyway i still think no smartphone for kids is the best…
1. won’t damage their eyesight
2. won’t waste too much playing games

I gave my dd a smartphone when she did well for her P3 exam,but it is without the data plan.

And so far i have no problem with her having a smartphone.Any download or installation will be done by my DH.

My kid is not ready for all this type of phone. We gave him and spent most of the time playing. So we gave normal phone bought in 7-11 type.

This phone is for him to contact us after or before tuition. Usually he will travel himself to United Sq and nearby vicinity for his tuitions.

yes, every child is different… some mature earlier and some later… so there is no one fix formula in bringing up a child…

Hi, we were using challenging maths and conquer problem sums last year. Would continue to do the same next year, that is if I can still understand the solutions given! No choice, dh works late and dd doesn't go for tuition classes, so there's only mummy left to hold the fort.

Actually, dd spend most if not all of her homework time on Maths. She is fine with the basics but can't solve challenging questions. Can't 'think out of the box' - as what her maths teacher said. Probably inherited it from me.

Dd has a low end smartphone. We didn't purposely buy it for her, it comes free when dh gets a handphone upgrade under his contract. We did not subscribe to a data plan for her, so it's basically just a normal phone in her case.


That said, dd does play with computer games at home. I set the rules -30 minutes each on Saturday and Sunday and as long as she does not breach the games of the rules, I'm ok with that. Just treat it as a chance for her to hone her hand-eye coordination skills lor. So far so good, she auto set the timer each time she's on the computer and we have not had any issue.
