Come discuss and share about SHHK's BiCEP programme at its 5 primary schools.

Parents whose children are or were or will be or hope to be in BiCEP, can network here too.

        What is BiCEP

Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan (SHHK) launched a 3-year BiCEP in all its 5 affiliated schools in 2007 for selected Primary 4 pupils. The programme is strongly supported by the Ministry of Education.

BiCEP is designed by a team of experienced Chinese Language teachers, in consultation with Chinese language and culture experts to develop a core group of students who are effectively bilingual and bicultural. It places strong emphasis on empowering pupils to discover their Asian heritage and to nurture their interests to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and language.

The programme includes the following components:
        - Children’s Literature Appreciation and Creative Writing
        - Chinese Culture and History
        - Similarities and Contrast of Chinese and English Languages
        - Chinese Oratorical Skill Training
        - Immersion Programme (local and overseas)
        - Chinese Cultural Activities

DD in P4 Bicep… so far, I would say the exposure is good. Too short to see any results yet.

                  Hi there,

Can anyone advise on the selection criteria for BICEP for all the SHHK schools in Primary 3?
I think it differs from school to school…
For one, academic result is the 1st criteria. What about written test or aptitude test?

Need to be top 15% for Eng+chinese to be invited for selection. The selection test includes interview+written compo+mini games in teams.

                      Thanks.

I suppose the written test, compo and games are all conducted in chinese?

After the selection, a letter will be given to indicate interest ?

Is it possible to drop out the 3 year programme any time? Any penalty or fees to pay if drop out?

Sorry for late reply but hope that it benefits other parents.

Selection are all in Chinese, for my kid's school, it is also about the interest level. Chinese standard need not be excellent but from what I observed, cannot be too poor. My guess is at least 85 marks and above.

If selected, parents will be notified via parents gateway. Then school will give parents a letter to sign to commit to the 3 year program. Cannot drop out midway. It's a commitment cause by P5 and P6, there would be considerations like tution and other homework. Need to stay back 1 day a week.

I think the condition for joining bicep is that student must take HCL all the way until PSLE. Which I think is a reasonable expectation since their Chinese foundation is not too bad in the first place. I don't know if there is option to drop HCL if someone is in bicep.
