All About ADHD : Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

slmkhoo:
I was under the impression that the psychologist's report was the thing that was 'valid' for 3 yrs, in the sense that if you want to submit it to MOE for another reason later on, they will ask for a new assessment if it's more than 3 yrs since the last assessment. Exemption from MT, at least in my daughter's case (not for ADHD), was stated as all the way up to 'A' levels. But she was already P6 when we applied, so maybe it's different for younger kids?
It makes a difference at primary school levels because of PSLE. The psychologist's report is valid for 3 years so if it expires at P5, you need a \"fresh\" one in order to be exempted from PSLE Chinese or perhaps you need to have the psychologist confirm that your child is still suffering from the learning difficulties. After you're done with PSLE, it's exemption forever!! Don't ask me how come like this, I was stunned myself when my friend had to get a new assessment done. Maybe there were some technicalities in terms of updating the records with MOE every 3 years which my friend didn't do.
Hi beanbear, do u or others have recommendation on the assessment and also on Education Psychologist.MamaO:
Hi MamaO, Be prepared to pay around $1600 - $2000 for the assessment especially if you want a complete report that can be used for MOE exemption from Chinese and accomodations for exams eg extra time, quiet room, etc.
By the way if you are considering looking at for an Educational Psychologist, do check out their credentials properly and ask them if they have experience writing reports for the purpose of getting MOE exemptions.
I consulted my friends who had done this and it really helps to work with a Psychologist who understands how MOE works.
By the way, the report for exemption only lasts 3 years. My friend whose kid got his assessment done in P2 was told that his exemption is \"expired\" at P5 and if he wants to be exempted at PSLE, he needs to go for another round of assessment. My friend paid another $1800 to get it done!!
I do not know exemption is only for '3 years'! Thought is forever as once you did not take up the subject how are u going for PSLE or further.
Hope someone can recommend the above. -
MamaO:
I will pm you the contacts of the psychologists that my friends and I have used. Its an average of 4-6months waiting time. Be patient. It's better to get it done correctly. There are many many tests that can be done but a psychologist will ask for family history, interview you thoroughly and is keen observer of your child.

Ours was done more than 3 years ago but once the school’s learning support officer is aware of your report, she/he can follow up with requests for exemptions etc. We didn’t need any exemptions in the end but DS gets complaints for being too talkative and not paying attention blah, blah, blah from teachers on and off.

Teach them how to be independent at home first. Like going toilet and eating. Must stay focus too, otherwise, may not learn anything in school.

I think the pre-school teachers adopted the 因才施教approach but in primary school, due to the mass students and structured way of learning, children at lower primary may not be able to take it, especially for those who questions a lot and do not accept surface answers. In this new age, perhaps online learning will be better so that children can learn at their own pace and not get bored in school especially for children with ADHD.
However, being in the society, we just need to keep training and reinforcing our children to abide to sit at own desk and complete the work even when they already knew how to do it, for the purpose of getting assessed whether they knew their stuff and allow others to learn in a conducive manner. -
Wonder anyone tried TCM to treat the above? My friens’ gal has ADHD and seems hyper but she refused to give her medication as have side effect.

Can try watching her diet. Certain foods can trigger more hyper behaviours.

Further to Kitty2 post, anyone tried or know more about TCM treatment. Just seen doctor again after 1 year waiting. My boy is confirmed ADHD and i do not feel good with medication too but do not know if there is any other way to help him. His hyper part i can bear with but his focusing and attention is very bad which will result in poor result.
Any parent here who did not give their kid medi and could handle them and their result are still fine. Please help. -

Depends on individuals so you'll have to observe and eliminate. Sweet stuff definitely one of them.fifiyeo:

For us, milk is a major one. DS got a weak stomach so it makes him feel uncomfortable and irritable which results in bad behaviour. He loves milk that's the worst part.
