My DD is in P5 this year. Just to share, I was complacent about the jump because she was the top 25% of her school's cohort during P4. I envisioned the strategies we put into place would serve her and me well - buying and doing worksheets/top school papers diligently closer to exams is sufficient. I was wrong. My focus on results and not on the process is incorrect.

What I think I would have done differently is let her have more time to PLAY. This year, I shed silent tears when I see her workload. I should step in earlier when extreme burdens are placed on her in the guise of homework e.g. 40 book reports in 2 weeks. I cringe when I see the remarks teachers make on her worksheets. I should have monitored more closely because the pace is faster in P5 compared to P4. I would build up her self motivation and self resistance to negative influences. I would encourage learning for self-discovery to make it less of a chore. I should have also stepped in earlier to advocate broad-based reading not just her fav chick lit. Quality reading NOT quantity translates into better English vocab.

Above all, the push to want to study to bridge the gap must come from the child because it gets really hard...and it MUST be enough if the child has really tried but is still not doing as well as your own expectations. Because we as parents must never lose sight of the fact that exams and PSLE are only part of the long journey ahead....

What 40 book reports in 2 weeks that's demanding, how come the teacher didn't paced it throughout the year?

All the comments here are p5 studies will be steep and faster. Wondering if the teachers are rushing to clear all the teaching topics including the p6 ones.

I am in the same boat with everyone.


Son will be going to P5 in '13 and then PSLE in '14. Have been pyschoing him that if he can do well in PSLE then have choice to choose better schools. Any tips and strategies are welcome.

Finally, I’m joining this thread…
We all know by now, P5 is much tougher than P4… big jump in school workloads etc. I’m letting DS1 enjoy the last two weeks of school holidays ( but started his tuition in December already ). I’ve psyched myself up too… but not forgetting I have a child going to P1 next year too…
All the best to us in 2013 and support and encourage our children for the tough journey ahead.

Wow... this is indeed scary. My eldest dd is P6 this year so I am going to face PSLE.... followed by my P5 ds who will sit for it in 2014.... I probably got to learn from this year first before I can contribute..... But but... they are different.... alot depends on his performance this year as well to see where he stand....


We've talked about DSA options based on their desired CCA. Ability to get in is a separate issue.... That is like in 6 months time... :nailbite:

But before that.... we still have to face CA1 and SA1.... another :nailbite: and btw, today is just the 1st day of school...... So for those of you sitting in 2014.... chill ok
