Also, I did not buy the mag. It was given free when I bought a stash of books and I was able to use the 1st one to get a discount for the 1st stash of books.

You are new Popular card member ? Every June/Dec school holidays, Popular run the 20% off for member promotion. In the past, there was 1 coupon in 1 PopClub magazine. Each member suppose to get 1 magazine but there's no central control that a PopClub magazine has been issued to a member (meaning some will 'actblur' and go get another one and hence another 20% off coupon.

This year, they wised-up ! 3 coupons in one magazine but if you try to get the 2nd magazine, their system will show you already claimed a PopCub magazine...didn't know that you can 'buy' another magazine at 50cents. I guess they just want to cover the printing cost of the PopClub magazine.

Also...better go fast as I think promotion ends 31st December. Yup, one transaction ie. stash of books+stationaries one coupon.

hi, i remembered having ‘Or else the lightning god’ by catherine lim as one of my secondary school literature books. i had really enjoyed this book. After almost 2 decades, it appear on the son’s sch recommended reading list. I have tried looking for it in the library but no avail, it’s also not on sale on any of the bookshops. Any one have idea where can i gt this book? i really would like to read it once more.

My younger son was 4 in July. I will let him finish the Peter & Jane books till say Level 6C. I will then start him on the Thomas the Tank Engine suite of books - as they have fantastic plots and a plethora of challenging words. He is mad about Thomas and will watch it on TV, or play with his \"Thomas\" toys. The point I am making is to find the book, that will grab and sustain a child's interest.


Books based on their favourite TV programmes are a good way to start. Whatever the book it will surely have stimulating vocabulary, very good grammar and punctuation and entertaining plots. This will certainly enhance any child's word decoding, recognition and comprehension.

That being said, finding books for boys is always difficult - unless it has shooting and war games in the plot. :!:

Just some context about myself. :idea: I am concious that I have posted numerously over the last few days, and I thought I would give some details about myself. I am finding it difficult to enter the info in the \"Profile\" section, and I may need some help on that. :?

I am a married man, with two sons. I am a 43 old Indian; I was born in the UK, but my parents are from India. Indians are like Singaporeans, and have the education-work ethic. I taught my children to read and count from 2.5 years to 4. My wife deals with reading with DS1 and 2 between ages of 4 and 6. I then take over with a challenging programme of small pieces of English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning. As my wife and I both work full-time, we ensure kids have a balance of fun and homework in the evenings and weekends. DS1 finds he enjoys the Singaporean assesment books, and says they are more challenging than work done at school. DS2 has just started Reception (age 4-5); and while not as prolific a reader as DS1; he knows his 42 letters and diagraphs, is reading Rigby at school, and Peter and Jane at home.

I have one eye on preparing my children for entrance/scholarship to Rugby School, Marlborough College, Wellington College or Eton College. It is most likley, we will opt for Rugby, as the others are boarding schools; Rugby (which is a day and boarding school) is also a short distance away and we can ferry the kids there, each day, by car.

I have also recently become a Literacy and Numeracy Governor at a poorly performing Secondary School. In my first 12 months now, the school's GCSE results have risen above the \"poor\" threshold mark, and the school whilst still poor is not a forlorn case - and is now moving onwards and upwards. NB, GCSE's are nowhere as hard as your O'levels, and that's a discussion for a future thread.... :x

PS as I am on Xmas holiday for two weeks, I will be on this forum a lot during this period.

Cafelatte, The embarrassing thing is, I'm not so new to Popular. I probably joined last year and bought some Kindy Chinese assessment books and Chinese reading books. (Definitely, my Chinese character stroke writing improved :D). Even bought some math books, but then kind of lost steam. We renewed it cos we'll need for P1, but ah, dunno what to buy because there is this wall of assessment books, and I don't know where to start. Tk goodness for this thread, I now have some names, especially for English.

We tried Challenge Math earlier on but my son hated it. I found it pretty convoluted myself :shock: . Actually, he hates assessment books, which is probably why we stopped shopping there. I'll leave it to school to instill the discipline he needs [maybe this can be another thread!]. Anyway, cannot avoid from P1, too bad! :evil:

I think I've seen the magazines - like got pop stars in the front? NEVER MIND if not! I'll pop over and see if they even have it while making sure I have a pair of scissors handy in the handbag!!
