Oh sharks. With so many parties contesting this time, I get a feeling I am now one of THE scapegoats. Ok, from now on, I shall be on self-administered gag order.

The Workers’ party Secretary General Low Thia Khiang says the party is ready to contest the by-election in Punggol East SMC.


Speaking to the media before the start of his Meet-the-People Session this evening, he said the party will announce the candidate in due course but the logistics are ready for the by-election.

When asked about the timing of the by election, Mr Low said that it is good that the prime minister has decided to call a by election as soon as possible.

He said it is fair so that residents of Punggol East SMC can have a representative.

Asked about his party’s confidence in contesting the ward, Mr Low said he does not want to speculate on the results but that the party has contested there before and is thankful for the support from voters.

He said the voters have seen what the party can offer and it will be up to them to decide.

He did acknowledge, however, that the PAP has an advantage as the incumbent.

He said so far, there are no plans to have a joint meeting with other opposition parties who have voiced interest to contest.

Actually to have a reasonable chance to emerge as an alternative party, various opposition parties should consolidated into one. Like New Zealand and United States with two powerful parties. Not going into the debate of pros & cons of having 2 powerful parties (seems to be more cons than pros in US recent fiscal cliff situation)


Although realistically I think quite unlikely to happen within the next 2 decades. Clearly all the opposition leaders want to be the big boss. Even though WP is supposedly the 'bigger' opposition at this point of time, the other 'smaller' parties obviously are still hopeful to over take WP and are not ready to be absorbed/consolidated/merged (whichever terms to describe ) As long they remain 散沙 they pose no real threat to PAP

Even if think with knees cap, can easily predict the result of this by election. Similar situation during president election with 3 corner fight, votes get diluted. If one to one contest in this by election, well then maybe WP has chance. Maybe only. However, as long as there is multi corners fight, PAP will certainly win. Certainly.

imho though, I firmly feel that individually, VW is the most promising to be in Parliament to serve the PEOPLE's ( not the party ) needs. But I doubt WP will step aside as the area is near their backyard which they have tussle previously, totally understandable and WP entitled as first option as opposition there.
