Mama Mania:
Hi Mama Mania, Drama Mama & all
Totally agree that \"They can only be productive if they want to study.\" True, no point nagging or shouting. When they feel the heat, you will start to see they are more automatic towards their revision. To make her feel better, I will always remind her she is not alone taking the PSLE, the whole cohort is mugging, revising, struggling with her and that makes her feel better.Drama Mama:
Hi Shan,
My advice is try sitting DS down and have a good talk. Avoid shouting and nagging (I know it is tough but you must try). Plan things with him and make him set goals and work with him to get to his goals. They can only be productive if they want to study. So if you do it by force it will be a waste of time- his and yours.
To me computer games are not totally not advisable as they occupies the mind and taxing to the eyes. Hence, kids can never get enough of it. Talk to him and make a deal. If he must have it, put it in his schedule. Drawing up a work schedule is good and all must try to follow it closely.
I went through 2 PSLEs (last one last year) with my DD and DS. Both experience were different, but we grew a lot closer after that.
All the best! What you need most is patience and more patience and you are not alone.
Thanks so much for sharing. I will try to work out a schedule together with DS and have a good talk. I guess I must try not to shout at him since it is not working. If only he is as motivated in learning as he is in reaching the next level in computer games. Thanks again. -
Hello parents, can the student uses correction tape during PSLE exam? My child relies a lot on correction tape especially for Math papers. Please advise. Thanks.

Theres already a discussion on whether use of correction tape is allowed can refer to the above thread. -

Hi. My DS can be quite addicted to computer games. Once he got up in the middle of the night to play! So DS only gets to play computer games during school holidays, and only if he performs to my expectation during the exams. If I let him play after he finishes his work, the quality of the work suffers cos he will rush thru it.. He gets to pick a few cartoons that he likes, I record them and he gets to watch as a break from studying, with my permission. This is the procedure from P3 to P6 and worked well for him.
Not advisable. Computer addiction is a problem hard to handle.Shan:
Hi, need advice.
DS doing PSLE this year is not motivated. I have to nag/shout at him to do his school/ tuition centre hw, revise & pack his bag otherwise he will be watching cartoons, just lazing around. He said doing work is boring. He is doing ok in Maths & Science but getting 50s-60s for English & Chinese.
He keeps asking to play computer games but I told him he can play only on weekends. In the past, he will be \"motivated\" to do his hw if I allow him to play computer games after he finishes.
For parents of kids doing PSLE this year, do you allow your kids to play computer games on weekdays? Appreciate if you can share. Thanks!
Got to be careful. Boys tend to be addicted to computer games.... -

Hi. I only allow DS 2 hours of computer game each month. No exception for holiday. No iPhone games on weekdays but I allow him to play iPhone games on weekend provided he had completed his homework.Hi, need advice.

How do you get your DS to listen & not play computer games? Maybe I started too late, trying to control now when he is in P6. He gets very angry when I said no. I have another younger boy who is asking to play games every day, telling me need to collect somethings in the games, etc. Sigh! -

Once addicted, it's very hard to reverse. Put your foot down before its too late. -

I think around P2 when I noticed he spent a lot of time playing Club Penguin online. My DH actually thought it is ok to play computer so I have to argue with him :nunchuk: to limit our son's computer game time. I showed them articles of bad things that happened to computer addicts e.g. The couple in Japan (or is it Korea?) whose baby died while they were busy taking care of their online baby, the boy in China that died after many days playing at the internet cafe, etc.
Maybe you can sit down with your DS to discuss about this issue. Make him understand that there is actually nothing good coming out of addiction to computer game. Make computer game time as an incentive. For example, if he can get above 80 on a test in school, then he gets 15 minutes computer time during weekend. Or, if he gets above 30/40 for compo, then another 15 minutes computer game during weekend. So, it is an incentive to get quality work.
You must be firm. Don't give in to them no matter what they say or even if they get angry. You are the boss. They must listen to you. It is for their own good. -
I will always remember what my son’s doctor said to me…that was 12 years ago…‘You are his mother and not the other way’.
Parents cannot be friends with their kids or the respect and authority when needed to impose will not be effective. -

Somehow, out of sight ... Out of mind. As for computer, our computer is located in the dining room area... Everyone gets to see the contents on the computer as they walk from living room to dining room to kitchen... No privacy so can't hide and sneak to play.
If DS gets angry and sulks, he knows he still won't get his way. In fact, he can sulk whilst being punished. I'm a fierce mom. :nunchuk: He follows the rules and meets / exceeds my expectations, he gets his bonuses ( which includes his games ) during school holidays.
For my DS, letting him play during weekend or weekday after his work is completed, simply didn't work. He kept asking when he could play, which meant that he was thinking of his precious games too much, when he was supposed to be focusing on his school work.
For P6, he didn't get to play till PSLE ended. The amount of playtime depended on whether I thought he put in enough effort and his marks for prelims etc.
You know your child best.... Do what you think best suits him.
