P5 vocabulary list shocks parents

Does the teacher expect the kids to just recognise the words, or define them, spell them, use them? Because there is no harm in introducing advanced word to kids if there is no pressure to 'learn' and use them. If the teacher just wanted them to develop some passive knowledge, I see no problem with these words.

The more effective way for anyone to learn a word is to learn them in the context with which they are being used. Spelling words are derived from the passages that they read. If the words are relevant to what they are learning at the moment, it is easier for them to remember and apply.

If these words are derived from any material that they are given and are supposed to be relevant to what they are learning now, then :scared: :faint:

I do question the purpose of feeding kids such big words when they will be hard pressed to find any occasion to apply them. And thereafter, it will be all but forgotten.
