My son was not assessed before he was admitted to the kkh rehab for OT and ST. So I don't see how u can't gain access to it.
And I also sent him for allergy test. Same thing, I don't understand why u can't send yours for it. I just said mine was always coughing and I just wanted to test it and I wanted my younger gal to get tested too.
In fact, u can request to see a dr on allergy in kkh. Get the test done and get a referral to see the OT and ST rehab from that doctor.

      mashy,
tks for the tips, i was understood and assumed too much. everytime i called KKH or ARC, they all said i needed to get assessed in CDU to enjoy the benefits. how to get admission to KKH rehab for OT and ST?

for allergy test, i called KKH. to enjoy subsidies rate of the test, I need to go polyclinic to get referral. we went to poly a week ago for my son's skin rashes, doctor told me it's atopic and no allergy test is needed. I didnt tell doctor my concern as i fear it will leave some record. at this stage, i dont want it to be in the system as yet.

But mashy, i found this below. from your experience, KKH rehab's OT and ST doesnt belong to EIPIC service.
4. How do I apply for EIPIC for my child?
Your child should be seen by a doctor at any polyclinic or private practice. The doctor will refer your child to a Child Development Unit (CDU) at KKH, NUH or SGH. A doctor from the CDU will assess your child and recommend him/her for early intervention if necessary.

one question pop in my mind. how many of you have tried EIPIC centres? i wonder the percentage of using private vs EIPIC.
Kkh is not the only route to get into govt subsidised EIPIC under CEL. You can get a private psychologist do a psychological assessment for your child and the psychologist can do a referral to EIPIC.
ImMeeMee.
you are right, i take a look at the admission criteria again. as long as he's sg citizen or PR, and he gets diagnosed.
On constipation: my Asperger's daughter suffered from that too. When she was younger, we found that a prune or some other dried fruits a day plus plenty of water solved that problem. We stopped the daily prune when she was around 8yo, but made sure she gets lots of fruits and veg plus water daily.

On ABA: when my daughter was young, we had never heard about ABA, but the literature did talk a lot about behaviour modification. From the little I have read about ABA, it's a formalised system but essentially the same thing. We did that with my daughter from the time she was a toddler, even before we realised that she might have ASD traits. It does work, but I don't think you need a lot of special training as long as you read up and have common sense to tailor it to individual needs. More importantly, you need to be consistent and it has to be applied at every opportunity, so my being a SAHM was actually crucial, now I think about it. I can't remember how severe your son's condition is, but we have managed with my Asperger' girl up to now (16yo). She wasn't in Singapore school as we lived overseas, so I'm not sure how tough that will be, but we plan to put her back into the Singapore system for 'A' levels. Surely there must be some principals and teachers in Singapore who are willing to cut some slack for ASD kids. Basically, my arrangement with my daughter's teachers was that they should accommodate her only as far as it didn't overburden them (the teachers), and anything that needed extra work, they should tell me and I would take responsibility. So I became my child's advocate with the teachers. I know that teachers are too busy to spend that much time on a single child, and I was already grateful that they would accommodate my child as much as they did.
slmkhoo,
staying at home does help a lot only when you know how to interact with the kid and keep him engaged. i am a mother without much instinct of game playing with kids. I am trying to change myself by having some 1 hr a day structured play hour else i dont know how to help him outside of his ABA session. I try not to apply ABA too much as I perfer to do the RDI way. so currently i am building a strong foundation on relationship with my son. still working on this and at the same time i try to look for more games and make myself more interesting. Someone analyzes my hobbists and tells me that none of my hobbist is child-involving. I need to change so that i can involve my son more. As i am staying with my parents, i dont do much of house work. I am fortunate in this aspect. but at the same time, i am losing some opportunities to do house work together with my son (something i learn from RDI program).

and prune, are you give prune juice or fresh fruit? i see prune juice of sunrise or sunsweet brand from korea in super market. other dried fruits? aren't they all processed? good?

      some updates on my son
my son is showing good improvement since a few months back, although he has still his own problems. his echolalia and speaking inappropriately is one of the big issues. His eye contact is much improved, and often calls for baba mama for fun response. He calls baba hunderds of times a day in different tone and he does look at baba for response. then again, too much is not good either. He is still addicted to songs and music and beans in the jug. we try not to give too much musical toys except for feeding water time for his constipation issue. his fine and gross motor skill needs some work on. he has difficulty doing big movement imitation, or he's not willing. hes can threading well now.:-)
U can just insist on getting an allergy test done. Mine was based on rashes and asthma. Also quite far removed but the doctor simply agreed. U can get a referral from the allergy clinic doctor for the rehab OT and ST. U can say his speech is slow and gross motor skills (or fine motor etc) is delayed. Then they will refer u to see the rehab side. Remember to ask for rehab specifically. If they offer CDU, turn it down, ask them to go rehab coz 'faster'.

Yes, rehab is not part of the Eipic. They are different departments. Eipic is run by kkh CDU. If u wanna send your kid to Eipic, then u can go thru CDU but that will also mean getting your child assessed. In rehab, they will assess only based on age appropriate skills and not whether they have ADHD/autism etc.

        mashy and other mummies,

have you tried – The Hanen Program for Parents in KKH rehab? more than words seem quite good. If i get to see doc in Rehab, i will ask for subsidized rate for this program.

            Kar Kar,

How I got into KKH rehab was through this course. I expressed interests in attending this course and a SLT called me. She told me she need to access my child to see if he is suitable for his course or not.

After assessment, the SLT found that it will not be useful for me to attend this course as my boy is verbal. However, they ask me if I am interested in going for their SLT Therapy instead. Of cos I am interested. That's how I got into KKH Rehab SLT. Hope this helps.

Try enrolling for the course and see where it leads you.

that's a good coincidence. are you enjoying subsidized rate then?
wont' they ask you if your child is verbal over the phone before face to face assessment?

Yup I am paying subsidized rate cos my son is also with CDU and is a regular patient of KKH.

They did ask me few qn abt my son but still wanna assess him before recommending me for the course. The course is not cheap and it last few days. So I am glad they did the assessment.

I just brought my doter to the KKH Rehab for OT a few days ago. I asked about services availability for children beyond 7 yo. Therapist informed that Rehab will continue to see patients beyond 7 yo. But they have recently introduced a new policy where patients need to go for doctor’s review after every 5-6 therapy sessions.

                  Anyone has heard about this?

Structure learning is said to be good for teaching ASD kids. In fact for most EIPIC centres, they will adopt a structure learning programme for ASDs.

Why are u so worried about?
